Solved HDD format question

I add a 1TB HDD to my pc (Vista Ultimate X64). Initiliazed and formatted (took 2+ hours!).
But it now shows up in Computer Management as Disk 0, with my Vista on Disk 1, and another HDD as Disk 2. Is that a problem? Does the OS have to be on Disk 0?

Also, the new HDD has no letter assigned to it and doesn't show up at all in Windows Explorer. Do I need to reformat the whole thing?

This is Normal This means that there are 2 Partitions on your HDD Disk 0 Is most likely a Recovery Partition and Vista will have been Installed on Disk 1

Also it is normal that it doesn't show up in Windows Explorer this because it doesn't have a Letter assigned to it for Example for Windows Explorer to Read a Disk it will need a Letter for Example Usually Windows Vista is Installed on Drive C:\\ - C, Being the Drive Letter

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Unfortunately that isn't the setup on my pc.

Disk 0 is 931.51GB, while Disks 1 (C) and 2 (D) are both 465.76GB. The two older drives (C and D) are each 500GB, while the new one is 1TB. Somehow it seems the new disk got installed "ahead" of the other two.

How do I fix this?

SOLVED - In Disk Management I right clicked on the box showing the new HDD, clicked on Change Drive Letter and Paths, then Add, then added it as F: drive. Now it shows up in Windows Explorer.

Yes that is Precisely what I meant when you Assign a Letter with a Partition it will then show up in Explorer as another HDD ;)
