Solved XP Compatability Mode Won't Work

Hello. I am using Vista Home Premium 32bit.

I need to be able to run programs in XP compatability mode, but any and every program I run in XP SP2 compatability just causes the "hourglass" to spin for a few seconds and then nothing happens. The program never opens!

This is extremely frustrating, especially seeing as Windows 2000 compatability mode doesn't cause this problem, but it's not the compatability mode that I need.

Is there any way to fix this, or to perhaps just "install" Windows XP SP3 compatability mode?

As a side note, the run as administrator box is grayed out, probably because I have UAC off. I'm not sure if this is relevant.

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

I am thinking along the lines of corruption of WinSxS .dlls (the ones relating to Windows XP - ie the old ones) Please run SFC:

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

Thanks!

Richard

To first person -- yes I know what I'm doing.

I ran the SFC. It didn't directly fix the compatability problem. Here is the text file:

EDIT: It seems like sometimes any program I try to run in compatability, even though it doesn't launch in a window, it appears in the processes tab of task manager. This only happens some of the time, seemingly randomly.

Could you please give us some of the names and versions of the programs that need to run in Compatibility Mode?

Do no programs that require Compatibility Mode run or do you have any that actually work (or have ever worked)?

What version of Vista are you using, including bit-size and SP number, and are you completely up-to-date on Windows Updates?

Try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. Choose Compatibility Mode and try the programs. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hmmm. I was kind of hoping for a bit more of a corruption to sink out teeth into. Can you please re-run SFC, and re-upload the new log, so that we can check that that file actually has been fixed. Thanks!

Fantastic! I'm thrilled that recommendation worked - I had a feeling it might be something like that. Sorry there's no easier way to ID the actual source of the problem, but that's pretty much the only way to do it. When you do find and remove the cause (if you can or want to - it may be something you use frequently and don't want to disable - we don't know yet), make a note of where you were in the process before you return things to normal. There may be more than one problem and if you need to go back and search for another one, you'll be thankful not to have to start over at the beginning.

Congratulations and good luck!

The process causing the issue is HsMgr.exe. If I boot windows normally compatability mode won't work, but then if I just end HsMgr.exe it works perfectly. I've just started researching it... do I need HsMgr.exe? What does it do?

Yes, you need it if you want sound. Please go to Start Search box, and type in msinfo32 and press enter. Please post a screenshot of Components > Sound Device, and anything else you know about your sound card. Have a look on the back of your computer. Is this a laptop or Desktop? Is the sound card integrated into the motherboard. You should be able to tell without opening anything.

Richard

P.S. This driver has a user grief on another thread I have worked on, but completely different to yours.

I believe if it is required for sound, it is included with the sound card and not part of the basic Windows sounds. It sounds as if your sound card doesn't need it, though it may not be operating at full capacity without it (depending on the card). Here's some information about the file (but do NOT download or use any of the software suggested on that page): HsMgr.exe Windows process - What is it?.

I'm not sure why it is in startup or what put it there. Go to Start / Control Panel / Sounds and click on the Sound Tab and then test some of the system sounds to make sure they function with the file turned off. If the Windows sounds work fine and the sound card works fine and you can't hear any difference in the quality of the sound, then uncheck the box that starts it at startup and you should be fine.

Remember, if you encounter problems later, you can always just recheck the box and things will return to normal (including your Compatibility problem).

Can you please post back the exact full filepath to the file (e.g., C:\Windows\System32\Whatever\HsMgr.exe)? It can sometimes be malware and I want to see where it is located as that is sometimes a sign.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Everything seems to be working on both soundcards, even games using directsound.

HsMgr is in C:\Windows\system\
Virus scan didn't find anything on it.
On the startup list its manufacturer is listed as "Unknown"

Everything seems to be working now, including the programs that needed compatability. Thanks again everyone!

Excellent! It was our pleasure to be of any help we could.

Thanks for the feedback - it is appreciated and will help others with similar problems (and us when answering those questions).

Don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

And welcome to Vista Forums! Now that you know where we are, bookmark the site and post anytime you have further questions or problems or if you just want to browse and learn (especially the Tutorial section offers some excellent advice on a wide variety of topics) or even if you want to try to help answer a question if you happen to see one where you know the answer and it hasn't already been posted. While it most likely won't be us the next time (though it might), there are many very skilled, experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly people here who, like us, volunteer their time to help others and one or maybe even several will respond to your post to assist you. While there are other forums on the web that do this sort of thing, you've now found what I think is the best (and I've posted in and/or checked out quite a few) so don't lose this link - you never know when it might come in handy again.

Good luck and best wishes.

Really glad that the issue is now resolved! I think that it is for the onboard, but glad that all is well now (and a small file system corruption fixed by SFC as well!)
