"Easy Fix" Gone wrong

ORIGINAL THREAD

^please read above thread. I got no help from the forum there so i have registered here too.

Basically. That "fix" of installing Vista to a 20GB IDE (formatted to 16.1GB) has failed spectacularly. The drive is out of space completely, 0 Bytes left, and i need to get it running of the 500GB WD drive that it ran off in the last PC.

I need to load vista onto it without deleting all the files. Should i make a partition of about 100GB for vista on the WD drive? Would that work and would i keep all my files? The IDE drive is really loud and slow and is full.

Thanks

Hi,

What experience have you got with resizing & cloning disks?

The reason I ask is, I feel this is the option to recover your situation. This is provided that your drives can be re-sized & partitioned to suit such an activity without loosing data. You also need to have all the appropriate software to hand?

Message back & we will look at your options.

I have no experience resizing/cloning disks but i work on PCs all the time, and it is unlikely i will not understand a piece of software, i can follow good instuctions well.

I have heard of a piece of software called Acronis (?) though, does this have relevance?

My Computer

Well no not reallly.

On a scale of "one to ten" how important are the files you have & would you pay good money to get them back? If so how much?

Not that that is to me. NO, you may need to purchase software or I'll have to find you free software & "baby sit" to complete the task!

So where do we go from here?

9/10, i dont care about my stuff except for maybe some C4D files, but my parents will not want to lose the photos etc. I guess i could move them to the terabyte though.

And i cant pay any money to keep them/get them back, i am not deleting them. I cant afford to pay for software like that, i use the legitimatesailorscove.com for my softwares.

If i were to re-install vista onto the WD, i would lose everything, yes? Even if i created a partition primarily for Vista?

Ok, slow down.

I need time to think here.

legitimatesailorscove.com fails to load?

Lol "legitsailorscove.com" = thepiratebay.com, i get most of my software off there.

Basically, i just need a guide as to getting vista onto the drive with precious files on, without deleting them. I have a second drive that i could possibly transfer the precious files onto, but im not sure if the user priviledges would mess up, so im hesitant to do it.

Sorry for going so fast but i have to go soon

Ok,

What can you access on the ther drives & yes copy every thing you want to keep over to the "Large" 1T drive for a start & then diconnect it to preserve all the invaluable information/ stuff you do not want to loose.

Alright, im going to transfer all of the "Users" folder, "Drivers" incase i need them, and "Program Files". There is a Windows folder, but that is from when that HDD used to run vista on an old machine. I am now on a new machine, hence the re-installations

SS

My Computer

Don't bother with Program Files. If something goes wrong and a re-installation is needed, you'll have to install the programs anyway - you can't just copy them over.

And we can create a partition on the drive (assuming we can make one with enough space), install Vista on it, and not lose any of the data on the other partition - but it has to be done in a certain way and carefully (and your drive sequence will be messed up (well - different) and your programs on the original partition will not function because they need to be installed and can't just be copied - you're not going to be able to get around that one).

Please go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management and take a screenshot and save it as a .jpg file and attach it to your next reply.

Thanks and good luck.

Cant take a .jpg as Paint.NET/Photoshop/MSPaint either arent installed or dont want to ope. I cant run many programs, due to "lack of disk space on C: Drive" (the drive that is causing all the issues).

I have moved the important files over, and i am going to format the drive now.

Take a look at this: Windows Vista system requirements - Microsoft Windows. With a 20GB hard drive formatted to 16GB, you are below what is needed to install Vista (and it apparently isn't working to prove that point as the drive is running out of space and will again if you try it again). We need to re-partition the larger drive with more than enough space on the new Vista partition and then install Vista there.

We'll go over the procedures once you are ready. I assume you have another computer to use to talk to us and download some files and create some disks.

OK,

You needed assistance & we will continue to support, if you need further assistance?

If you do the above, is the system back to how you want it & have you saved all your data?

I have copied important files to a backup drive, and i think that reinstalling Vista onto a fresh drive with miles enough space will solve all my issues, so yes. Thank you for the guidance

Oh, I thought you meant the 20GB drive. So the only drive on the computer will be the 500GB drive? Yes, that should work fine - and if you want we can partition it so you can install W7 on a separate partition (though you will need a full install version for that an not an upgrade version) and have both systems available in a dual-boot setup (or to separate your data or you can leave it all as one big partition - as I have - but then you really can't have both operating systems on the same drive). Your decision.

Before you consider upgrading to Windows7, when you are done installing Vista and everything else, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues and check the compatibility of your software and hardware (or that you are considering) at the Windows 7 Compatibiility Center: Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs & Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads. You can also determine the available upgrade paths (versus having to do a full and clean installation of Windows 7) at: Windows 7 Upgrade Paths.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. Don't forget to format the drive as NTFS and do a full format and not a quick format (if given the option). Actually, just installing Vista should provide this option as part of the process.
