Internal HDs showing too little remaining space.

My desktop has two internal HDs in addition to the C: drive.

Each of these is 500Gb.

One contains a single folder of 447Gb. It claims to have total capacity of 465Gb but only 95Mb remaining! Not the 18gb, or so, I'd expect.

The other 500Gb drive contains one folder totalling 388Gb. It claims to have a total capacity of 416Gb with 13.9Gb remaining.

1. Why don't both drives claim the same total capacity?

2. Why are there discrepancies in space remaining?

3. Can I get back any of the 18Gb that should be on the first drive?

Thanks.

D.

Rich,

Thanks for the link to WinDirStat. What a gem! :D

I mananged to delete one folder that has given me back 6Gb on one drive.

In both drives there is a folder (actually its icon is not a folder but a black square) showing up called simply <files>. It contains four items of which pagefile.sys is the big one taking up all the space.

If I right click on this in either HD and choose Delete I'm told it's open in another program and cannot be deleted.

Any idea why? Is there a workaround?

Getting rid of this file in both HDs would solve my problem.

Thanks.

I have found this article. I do not know of anyone who has taken the action suggested. I am not familiar with the results. Here is information that pertains to your situation.

Rich,

I've sorted it. Got some advice from someone. Here's how.........

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced System Settings/Performance Settings/Advanced Tab/Change

Now, highlight the C: drive and choose System Managed Size and click Set.

Then highlight the drive whose pagfile.sys you want to delete and click No Paging File and click Set.

You will now be prompted to reboot and when you do the drive(s) will have their missing space back.

Thanks for your feedback! :)

Rich,

One last thing.........

One drive is now still showing total space of 465Gb (about right) but the other is showing only 416Gb, according to WinDirStat.

Both should be the same.

Very odd!

Here's a thread that relates to why you may or may not want a paging file, how to adjust it, and other comments. Pay especial attention to those posted by Dwarf. http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/148974-paging-file-why-do-i-need.html.

The decision is yours but consider the comments in that thread. If you've already deleted it and decide to restore it but limit its size or change its location, those are all possible. Personally, I would never remove the page file from my system though I may consider limiting the sizs or moving it (but I honestly have no intention of doing either).

I hope this additional informatiion helps and that you are content with whatever you ultimately decide to do.

Good luck!

As Josh indicates age may play a part as the HD may be experiencing problems. Can you determine with windirstat, what accounts for the discrepency?
Lorien has a good suggestion, also concerning the file.

Lorien,

Thanks for that.

In addition to my C: drive and the two drives I'm having space problems with, I also have an internal scratch disk of 50Gb of which 15Gb are free. The paging file size is 12186.

Should I make this bigger?

Thanks.

The commonly recommended size of the page file is 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed (though that can be reduced if you have a 64-bit system with a LOT of RAM installed). Opinons vary (as you can well imagine), but that seems to be the most prevalent and has been what I have always used.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

At 12Gb it's exactly 1.5 times the 8Gb of RAM I've got.

Will leave the two other drives without pagefile for the moment then and see how I get on.

I've got Vista scanning one of them right now for system errors and recovery of bad sectors.

Sometimes I wonder should I just dump Vista altogether! :)

Unless you are having substantial problems with Vista, I would not change. I have Windows 7 and like it, but it is basically an upgraded Vista. Lot of eye candy.

Also there are many USB Driver issues with some Windows 7 Machines also A lot of Programs do not work with 64-Bit Windows 7

Just some Info apart from that Windows 7 is a Great OS
