Did you backup the Certificates before you re-installed? If not, I'm not sure it's going to be possible. If you have encrypted files in an NTFS partition of windows and you want to access it after re-installation of windows the only way to do so is to backup your encryption certificates before going for a fresh installation. But still, there may be some options.

Check C:\ in Windows Explorer to see if there is a folder called Windows.old as it may contain the Certificates. If so, post back and there's a chance we may be able to resolve the problem.

Here's another option (using freeware) that I've never tried but from reading the article it seems like it might work (but I'm not convinced because it frankly seems too easy and would defeat the purpose of encryption in the first place): http://www.ehow.com/how_5165025_recover-efs-encrypted-files.html.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll look again to try to find some way to gain access - but I'm not very hopeful (yet it may still be possible).

Good luck!

Lorien has really said what there is to say. We need those certificates. Before anyone asks, we cannot hack them. We would not be allowed to post it if we could, but we cannot anyway. The encryption used on these folders is very strong, because Microsoft turn the encryption up to a point where hacking becomes inefficient, otherwise encryption would be pointless. There is no coded loophole. We find the certificates, or we don't. Sorry.

hopefuly i have a backup from .uea file

but the error repeated: Unlocking: Not an authorized user

You say you have a backup of the Certificates? If so, they need to be added to the user profile in the proper location before you'll be able to access anything.

I probably should know this but I don't, so please clarify. What exactly is a .uea file and why do you think it contains the Certificates? How was this file created? I could understand a backup folder that may contain what we need, but I don't know if it would all be placed into a single file or what program would do that.

Also, what did you do with this backup file that you think would have resolved the problem as simply having it (even if it does contain what we need) isn't enough. We need the Certificates and then we need to put them where they belong to fix the problem.

Thanks and good luck!
