No battery is detected

For a few month after I change from XP to Windows 7 ultimate, my battery had decreased dramatically. Just at one time one message appears and it says "No battery is detected". What does it mean? How can I make my battery detected?
The thing is that I still can use my battery for more than 30 minutes right now but it just still say "No battery is detected". What should I do?

I'm using DELL 6400.

Hi,

From your statement above there only appears to be a couple of options: -

  1. Replace the battery.
  2. Install the Dell Recommended Vista Power Management Settings software this could re-establish the battery status.
Look here for it: -

Hi,

From your statement above there only appears to be a couple of options: -

  1. Replace the battery.
  2. Install the Dell Recommended Vista Power Management Settings software this could re-establish the battery status.
Look here for it: -

Drivers & Downloads

This software applies to Vista (as you note in your post); however, the initial post and the System Specifications state the computer is using Windows 7. I'm not sure if this program will work on Windows 7 (or if it will cause more problems if it actually does install) though I could find nothing equivalent for that model of computer (or for Windows 7) except the following under Step 3: Battery is not performing as expected | Dell. Before starting, confirm that I have the correct computer - it would be best to start with the Service Tag number and search specific to your exact computer.

That entire page is dedicated to battery issues with the 6400, so it's worth a look (you may need to update the BIOS or try some other options as well - just follow the instructions and make sure you use the correct versions for the computer and your operating system) but if you're going to try to update the Power management software, I recommend you use the version that appears to be most applicable to Windows 7. I must admit I had trouble finding any Windows 7 downloads for this computer model (assuming I have the right one) - and that may be the root of the problem - but if you use the Service Tag number, you may have more success as I could not be that specific in my search.

At some point, it recommends replacing the battery - though to be honest if this occurred at the exact same time you upgraded from XP to W7, I find it quite a coincidence the battery would decide to fail at that precise moment (but it is possible). I suspect instead that it is some type of compatibility problem with the battery or the adapter (or perhaps something else). Changing the software and BIOS may help and may in fact resolve the problem - they are certainly worth a try before buying a new battery or spending money to get it checked.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thank you Lorien for spotting my error. :o rep+

Please look here for Windows 7 compatiblity & advice on your DELL 6400: -

Looking for Windows 7 Drivers? | Dell

If you delve deeper into that link, you can determine if your computer is compatible with Windows 7. I checked the listing and did not find your model Microsoft® Windows® 7 Compatible Dell Systems | Dell. Then I went to the page for the 6400 drivers and downloads and the option for Windows 7 was not available: Drivers & Downloads=

Did you verify your computer was compatible with Windows 7 before you upgraded? I must admit I'm a bit perplexed that it has functioned for months with no other apparent problems if there is a compatibility issue - but maybe problems with the battery IS that issue (and maybe the only one).

Hi,
I would like to thank you all for your help.
My Service Tag is 77B14B1 DELL 6400.
I'll follow step by step as recommended. If it doesn't work, I'm thinking of replacing a new battery.

Regards,
Rumdoh

Please be sure to check Windows 7 Update Advisor just to be sure: Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues.

I double-checked with your Service Tag and your computer is not listed as one that can be upgraded to Windows 7 (even if you seem to have somehow done so for the most part). Oddly enough, I have almost the same model (but I have the E1705 - which essentially just means the same one with a bigger screen) - and I've confirmed that I cannot upgrade to Windows 7.

Otherwise, just follow the instructions as you plan. If nothing works, then I suppose you can try a new battery (if would be great if you could get one that permits you to return it in a few days for a full refund - and it needs to be the PRECiSE battery for that computer) even if I honestly do not think that is the problem - but I have no other suggestions to offer.

Good luck!

Hi,
Thanks. As far as I know, the reason I can't update my BIOS because it needs battery detected. So I just still can't update. For this reason, I can't put my laptop to Sleep. Is that true? What should I do to update BIOS (DELL 6400) without battery?

Regards,
Rumdoh

My Computer

Hi rumdoh,

Why can't you update the BIOS? What's the problem? Do you have the proper version? What is or isn't happening when you try? How are you trying to do it (give me the link if you're using online instructions)? The inability to update BIOS is new - you never mentioned that before.

To my knowledge, a battery is not required to update the BIOS in any laptop I've ever worked on. I see nothing to indicate it applies to yours (give me the link if you see something that says that's the case). If you think the battery is causing that problem (because it can't be detected even though inserted), just remove it and simple AC power will do fine (and the inability to detect it will no longer be a factor since it won't be there so of course it won't be detected and that, again, shouldn't interfere with the ability to update the BIOS. Assuming, of course, you can find a BIOS update as I couldn't (not for your current OS) - and if you're using the wrong one (even if it says it's for your computer but you have a different OS than before and it doesn't say the BIOS applies to that OS and using Windows 7 BIOS on your computer if not designed for your computer won't work either - and may even cause some serious problems) that may well be the reason.

Good luck!

Dear Lorien
Thanks for your help. I can't succeed in any things I have tried as what suggested. Because No Battery Detected, the message appears that I still can't update BIOS. One more problem is that I can't put my computer to Sleep. The screen just go black when I try to put it to sleep, but when I touch the mouse the screen is on and I can use computer normally. What else should I do to put my laptop to Sleep?

P.S. Though it says No battery is detected, I still can depend on batter for 30 minutes.
The message appears like the picture below:

Please humor me and check Windows 7 Update Advisor on your computer just to be sure there are no problems identified: Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues. Please send me a screenshot or a file copy (if it has the option to create one) of the results.

Thanks!

P.S. What method or methods have you tried to put your computer to sleep? I know several and before suggesting anything, I'd like to know how you do it now and what other methods (if any) you have tried. You say the scrren goes black, but it isn't really going to sleep. Besides how quickly it awakens, how do you know that? Can you hear the hard drive spinning or the power supply fan blowing or see any lights indicating that the hard drive is running or anything? When did this "won't go to sleep" problem start? Will it go into hibernation completely or does only the screen go black with that option as well?

My laptop information about upgrade Advisor is at the bottom.

Your words:
" P.S. What method or methods have you tried to put your computer to sleep? I go to sleep by
- Click Start -> Sleep
- Press Fn & Esc (Stand by)

When I click start or Press Fn & Esc, I know that the screen just turn off. Everything you mentioned is on. when I touch any keys or just touch the mouse the screen appears. That means, the laptop does not go to sleep. This problem happened soon after I just set up new Windows on my laptop.
I can't find the word hibernation near " Sleep, Switch off, Restart, Log off..."
So what is the main problem? Is it because I use Deepfreeze program on my laptop?

Regards,
Rumdoh

My Computer

Hi rumdoh,

Your Windows Update Advisor looks exactly like mine did/does and we have very similar models. The key is the notice to check with Dell. There you'll find that it isn't compatible with Windows 7 (as I pointed out before with the links and despite the fact that it works for the most part). I not only confirmed it online, but also did so with Technical Support (I got a 5-year warranty when I purchased it). I strongly suspect this is the main problem (but I can't prove it).

I don't know enough about Deepfreeze to determine if it is a factor, but I suspect it isn't (though again, I can't prove that). You can always uninstall Deepfreeze and see if that resolves the problems or makes no difference - then you'll know for sure. Then just re-install it when done if it isn't the problem and leave it off if it is the problem.

As you have Windows 7, I'm not positive how to activate or deactivate hibernation as it probably is different than with Vista (but if similar, it wouldn't be where you looked but in Control Panel and Power Options and you'd have to change the settings to specify hibernation rather than sleep for certain actions and then let those actions occur (waiting or doing something) and see what happens). When done with the test, just change the settings back the way they were. Here are two articles that may help: Hibernate - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums and Power Plan Settings - Change - Windows 7 Forums.

If this doesn't work, perhaps your best bet is to post in www.sevenforums.com where they specialize in Windows 7 and may be able to offer more assistance.

But again, I'm all but certain the main problem is that your computer is not fully compatible with Windows 7.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
