Brink,
No where on this forum or in the tuturals can I find a way to KEEP the files in a folder at a certain width.
I open all my folders with the LIST view... Then right clicking the 'Name' bar I can choose details.
At the bottom of the box it has "Width of selected column (in pixels): I change the width to 35. BUT... It is only good for that session. The moment the box is closed or I switch to another folder... It goes back to a much wider format. How do I keep the 35 width setting I want?
The column width is a universal setting. A column in Windows Explorer will always be as wide as it was last set to in any Windows Explorer window.
I find that using the Size a Column to Fit or Size All Columns to Fit(Method Three in OPTION THREE at link) options help make this easier to cope with the width when dealing with columns that always have varying text lengths in them.
While I'm not Brink, let me see if I can assist you anyway. EDIT: Ah, I notice Brink has already replied.
Here's how to change the default template for a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-explorer-folder-view-settings.html. Default behavior is to select the template based on the first type of file placed in the folder (it has to choose something). Vista sets the Explorer window view settings and folder type template according to what folder types are in the window. This will show you how to reset the Windows Explorer folder view settings, turn off Automatic Folder Type Discovery and increase the folder view cache to have Vista remember the view settings, folder type template, size, or position of a specific window for when it was last closed at the specific path location.
Here's another article on how to change the Windows Explorer columns and sort order in Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/108665-column-customize.html. This will show you how to add, remove, move, change the width, and change the sort order of Windows Explorer columns to how you want them.
I hope this helps though you should give much more consideration to Brink's reply than to what I posted here.
