Solved Old topic resurrected

Vista 32-bit Home Premium. This is an old topic and I checked out some of the solutions with no success. When I right click any folder on the desktop or in an Explorer Window, I get the "Explorer has stopped working and will shut down" message. Thought to be a context menu problem, but no solutions have worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, lets establish, Vista home premium SP? + others, IE8 yes?

You mention that you have looked around & not found a solution, correct?

I had this issue for a while recently (several weeks ago now) & Windows updates "came in & sorted it out" without me doing anything! I think it was compatability issues? I'm not sure though.

So please update your system & lets see from there. If you are fully updated??? I look around too.

SP2 and IE8. I have my system on automatic updates so that shouldn't be an issue. The solutions that I refer to are geared for XP, but in the Vista forum, and they address a problem with the context menu having an item that cannot be resolved. I will add that I have not installed hardware or software within the past 6 months and this is a problem that has existed for about a week.

Download ShellExView from here: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows Download link at bottom of page - English language ABOVE table!

Install and open it. Scroll to the right, and sort by column MICROSOFT. All of the red entries should come to the top. Single click on top one, hold down SHIFT, single click on bottom red, selecting all reds. Press FILE > Disable selected or press the F7 key.

If that solve the issue, enable half, half, half, until it goes wrong, re-disable that last bunch, half of them etc. etc. until you find the problem causing entry.

Since my last post I think the problem is solved. Went into Event Viewer and looked at the errors, especially the one(s) within the last hour. It identified pdshext.dll as having a conflict with explorer.exe. Like some of the posts in another thread, this is a Powerdesk file manager context menu item. I went into ShellExView and disabled each occurrence of the file. No more problem with right clicking folders.
While it solved this problem, I can no longer access Powerdesk by right-clicking. This is unfortunate because it is one of my "must-haves" and this issue has been going on for years.
Regardless, the immediate problem is solved and I want to thank everyone for their input. It is greatly appreciated!

I see your problem. I don't really know what to suggest. Updates?

The problem is solved so closing it would be appropriate. I only hope that if anyone ever comes up with a viable solution other than disabling an application's functionality that they post here in the future.

Not really. The fault lies in the applications coding and compatibility, and so you need an update from the original developer.

While perhaps not the same as having a right-click context option, could you add a shortcut to it to the Quick Launch Bar (one which does the same thing as the right-click context option) and get where you want almost as quickly - possibly even faster as it would be only one click away? I don't use it so I'm not certain, but maybe this will be a viable workaround.

I have a folder with nothing but shortcuts to my favorite applications and the path to that folder in Rocketdock, same as the Quicklaunch feature. You're right, it is a good workaround, but (as niemiro corrects me and points out) the developer needs to attend to this 3 year old problem.
