In vista when i open a folder of Quick time MP4 videos, windows explorer stops working. The green bar on the top of the window tries to load up & it than crashes.

This is a major pain. I cant even delete the folder as when I navigate to that area windows explorer stops working.

Please help!!!

thank you

Welcome
Does it happen in Safe Mode
If not use a clean boot to diagnose
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If it is just the one program that causes the problem the program may be corrupt. Try from another account.

Try going back to before the problem with a system restore
Go to search and type event viewer, look for any errors that appear in the adminstrative tab.
Go to device manager look for any yellow warnings indicating problems with drivers. Update drivers. Especially Video.
Run an SFC command
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
Make a full antivirus scan
Download and run malwarebytes. Make a full scan after you update.
Try in another user account.

it happens in safe mode too.

i actually remember this happening over a year ago & just ignored it as I never used MP4 videos much, so I don't think system restore would work now.

I tried a diff account, same thing.

There is only 1 yellow warning in DM with an Unknown device

ill try malwarebytes

As a last resort, make a system restore point then delete the program and reinstall.

Uninstall would be my suggestion. But make a system restore point first. Just in case things get worse.

strange. the folder of mp4s doesn't seem to cause windows to stop working atm. (fingers crossed) instead the green loading bar at the top window just takes ages to complete & finish to the end (right side). After a fair while the green bar goes away & all seems normal.

I had same issue when trying to open my movies folder-
Here is how i fixed it.
1. control panel
2. administrative tools
3. events viewer
4. this will bring up a log of errors
5. click on details tab

with me it showed that quicktime was the problem so i came out and googled a quicktime update and installed as per normal and the problem just went away.

hope this helps any one with this annoying issue.

Well, the fact that Malwarebytes found 2 Trojans is a bit unsettling. I wonder if there was any relation to this problem you are having.

In any case, the association of Quicktime with MP4 files is likely the problem, if your Quicktime installation is faulty, or Quicktime is struggling with some unexpected conflict.

I suggest restoring your default file associations. Many programs will try to assert themselves as the default to opening files, so the preferred associations will be set as you use those programs.

That post was dated 12-20-2010, so hopefully they've removed the infection since then! :)
