CMD (assoc) Acces denied while ran as admin

Hello,

I had some trouble with jre (java runtime environment) and jdk (java develompment kit), I fixed all, but .jar isn't associated with jarfile anymore. When I run CMD as admin and try assoc .jar=jarfile, CMD says acces denied. I couldn't find anything on the web and my friends had no idea. I hope you knew the solution.

Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Thanks in advance,

Yves W

Welcome and Happy Holidays
You have to run as administrator not just in adminstrative account.
Follow these instructions carefully. Especially the right click and run as administrator
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181765-elevated-command-prompt.html

If that does not work, try the same technique, but make the real administrator do it. Actually it was you money that bought the computer, but you are not the real administrator.
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums[2]=User Accounts

Many have trouble activating the real administrator. Follow instructions and keep trying until you get it right

Happy holidays, you too :). I already ran it as admin and I also tried the built-in admin account, which I activated using CMD. I got the same weird error =/

You are pretty good, not many know about the hidden administrator
Question

When you are in the elevated command prompt what do you see by the cursor

What is the path?

The path the CMD of the hidden admin displays, is:
Code:
C:\Users\Administrator
On my normal admin-account, CMD ran as admin:
Code:
C:\Windows\system32
Nothing special, as far as I know.

Here's the log of the hidden admin, however it's written in Dutch:
Code:
Microsoft Windows [versie 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. Alle rechten voorbehouden.

C:\Users\Administrator>assoc .jar=jarfile
Toegang geweigerd.
Er is een fout opgetreden tijdens het verwerken van: .jar.

OK you are on an elevated cmd.

Access denied is not because the cmd is not elevated, but because you are being denied access to the jar, jarfile.

My suggestion is to wait for another member to offer help. Since I do not feel comfortable with registry, that I am not familiar with, the last thing that I would want to do to you on Christmas Eve is give advice that may cause more harm than good.
I do wish you a very Merry Christmas and wish that the problem gets resolved quickly. I will leave a note with a Member that may be able to help.

I left a message, He is not in now. With Christmas and all may be a while, but others will probably come by.
Merry Christmas.

Hello!

That should work. Your permissions issue is abnormal. Probably just a permissions issue with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. That can be fixed if we need to. It is a Windows problem, and not a Java problem. Two steps:

  • Run the registry script attached to this post. This takes the place of .jar=jarfile. If this imports, then forget about assoc. If this fails to import, which it shouldn't, I will help you with permissions.

  • Right click on a .jar file > Open with > Browse > Location of Java bin, such as C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin > javaw.exe > OK.
See if that sorts the issue, otherwise come back here.

Thanks!

Richard

Thank you, I'm able to open them again, but it now can't find a main class, in all the jar files I have. I'm able to run them using java -jar file.jar, but I was already able to do that.

Hello!

I am so sorry for the delay. I was out at relatives, and then swamped with work. Thank you for PMming me, that was absolutely fine, but I was still trying to catch up!

Please try this. Since you are running fine with java.exe, I shall move it from javaw.exe to java.exe. See if this helps:

  • Right click on a .jar file > Open with > Browse > Location of Java bin, such as C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin > java.exe > OK.
Thanks, and good luck!

Nope, it still doesn't work, it displays a little screen for 0.1 seconds and goes away.
