Solved Program icons are blank (from other HD)

Hello,

I have some problems with icon visibility; I just reinstalled Flight Simulator X on my empty other drive. Naturally I wanted to have a desktop icon, so I created one from the fsx.exe file and copied it directly to desktop.

The problem is that the icon image does not show up. Previously the icon worked well (which is weird since I have made no adjustments on Vista - just reinstalled FSX). I have tried to change the icons without luck and get no errors or anything.

Also, I installed some FSX add-ons like FS Global 2010 and sadly their icons have the same problem. The program shorcuts appear in the Startup menu, but their icons are blank, just like FSX's. I suspect it'll be the same thing with every program I install on that drive.

Hi veksi,

Do the shortcuts work even if they don't have the correct icons? I mean, do the programs start fine? Is it only an issue with icons? If you actually copy the program .exe file rather than create a shortcut, does it too have an icon problem? And yet the icons are showing just fine on the external HDD?

I'm not sure why you can't change the icons - do you get an error message like access denied or something like that?

Try the following (with the external drive attached) to see if it helps: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117229-icon-cache-rebuild.html.

Then we'll check for permissions and ownership to see if that might be the issue (though it's doubtful if the programs are working). Can you change an icon on your desktop for a program installed on the computer rather than the external HDD?

I hope this helps (or at least helps us narrow down the cause).

Good luck!

Re: Program icons are blank (from other HDD)

Thanks for your quick reply Lorien!

The icon cache rebuild helped and now the icons are showing correctly. Otherwise the shortcuts were working fine, so it was only a cosmetical issue.
