Chkdsk will not run at startup; no cmd.exe will work

    • I want to install SP1 and SP2 but SP1 for Windows Vista fails to install.
    • 2 drives: OS and Recovery
    • I successfully defragmented and cleaned the Recovery drive, backed up all of my files on an external hardrive, and "cleaned" the OS drive (my C drive).
    • C: will not defragment until I check it for errors.
    • I scheduled an error check but it will not run at startup.
    • I tried multiple executive commands (according to microsoft.com instructions) to make the error check run and none worked.

I am hoping to check C for errors and go from there, and I am trying to avoid reverting back to factory settings, though that is fine for a last resort.

I am a self-taught intermediate computer user and I learn fast, but some of the complicated command language processes are beyond me.

    Welcome
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run malwarebytes at full scan and be sure to up date.
    run an sfc check.
    System Files - SFC Command
Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista
Try a clean boot. Does it work? If so follow directions to correct the problems
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Be sure to run cmd as administrator. Right click and then run as administrator.
    Elevated Command Prompt

    Disable the firewall
Make sure it is not due to memory.

Thank you for the reply! I am working on all of your suggestions now, but in the meantime, I found one detail to share that I forgot in my original post:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

I could not access the log per the instructions I read online (I don't even know what this log is). I think it said something like "log cannot be accessed".

I also ran some scans on memory and it said everything was clean and functioning correctly, but I will try your firewall suggestion when my anti-virus scan finishes. My anti-virus is up to date and says everything is proteceted and fine, but maybe the scan will turn up some helpful information.

TY that can be valuable information. Put that aside for now and continue the other instructions
If not corrected, with my solutions. We will analyze that log
    BTW
When you get that error report run the SFC three times more.
All problems are not always corrected at once
    Good luck

I am running the sfc scan again while my virus scan continues. I tried to access the resulting log with this command:

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

But no luck, the command window simply moved to another ready administrator command line.
I tried to access the file that specifies the corrupted files but it said,
"CBS You don’t have permission to open this file.
Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission."
I am the administrator and I am the only user on this computer. How do I access the txt file that tells me which files are corrupted?

Virus scan turned back perfect results.

If I read the records from the sfc correctly, these are the three corrupted files that cannot be "reprojected":

    pacer.sys.mui (from QoS)

    tcpmon.ini (from printing)

    autochk.exe (from autochk)

I have no idea what any of that means.

I will download the malware bytes and run a full scan next.

Would you be kind enough to download the files to us?

I attached the .txt file of my sfc scan results.

And I did find my Reinstallation DVD so that is an option

Thank you for your patient guidance.
