Destination Folder Access Denied

Hi Everyone,

This is a small part of a huge ordeal that I have gone through today with the error "Destination Folder Access Denied" that I want to try to explain as it may lead to help with larger issues.

I have a few folders in my "Music" folder, two of which are "Amazon MP3" and "Civ". When I try to rename either of them or move them to the desktop (I have no particular need to now, but I could in the future) I receive an error: "Destination Folder Access Denied" with the subheading "You need permission to perform this action" and the equally useless options "Try Again" and "Cancel".

I have figured out how to get this to stop, but only temporarily. Inside Amazon MP3 is a folder called "Vladimir Horowitz" (the composer of this piece of music). Inside that is "Horowitz Plays Chopin_Volume 2". Inside that is the MP3 file of the actual music. So, I have found that if I cannot rename Amazon MP3 or move it, this works: I go into Amazon MP3, then into Vladimir Horowitz, which contains Horowitz Plays Chopin_Volume 2, and rename Horowitz Plays Chopin_Volume 2 to "1". I then right-click in that folder to select "undo rename", so it returns to its original name. I then go up into the Amazon MP3 folder and rename Vladimir Horowitz to "1", and then undo the rename. Then I go into Music, select Amazon MP3, and I can rename it and move it now!

So, right now, Amazon MP3 can be moved and renamed, but still not "Civ", which I haven't tried yet. Now I do a similar process to Civ, which contains 5 folders with music files in each. I go into Civ, rename all the folders at once to "1" (which results in the names 1, 1 (1), 1 (2), etc.), and then undo rename as before. I go back into Music, and Civ can be renamed and moved!

After doing this, Amazon MP3 goes back to the way it was before, cannot be renamed, and cannot be moved. If I try my process out on Amazon MP3 again, Civ goes back to being incapable of being moved or renamed per the "Destination Folder Access Denied" error.

What is going on here?

I have Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I have all the recent updates. I am a moderate-high skilled computer user. UAC is off, though having it on changes nothing. I have tried editing permissions a dozen times, as most of my web searches suggest, and that does nothing, so please don't recommend that unless you have a novel thought other than this http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html. I have tried using safe mode which allows me to rename the files without going through this process, but when I reboot and leave safe mode, it goes back to before. Sometimes I have copied these files into my external hard-drive and then copied them back, but I have been doing this for a while without trouble. Amazon MP3 was a file made by an Amazon program when I bought music from them. Civ is a folder I made that I put music in that I copied from the program files of the game Civ 4. The music plays fine in iTunes. My computer has been off for the last month while I was away. When I came back and started trying to edit some files, this problem arose. I have not had it before.

Any help at this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome
It does sound like a permissions issue, but you have specifically asked not to go there , so I will not.
What I would do, since it works in safe mode is suggest a clean boot.
If it works in clean boot, you can follow the instructions to find the cause.
Safe Mode works with basically just drivers, so its not a drivers issue. Clean boot works without any start up programs, anti virus etc. Lets hope it is some software that is the cause of the problem
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
To be on the safe side you may also want to run a full anti virus scan and download and run an updated, full scan of malwarebytes.
If none of these ideas work, try a system restore from before the problem started.

I don't have time to try the clean boot tonight, but thank you for the suggestion and quick reply. I will also consider a system restore and virus scan this weekend.

In the meantime I did just want to say, regarding permissions, since everyone says "Destination Folder Access Denied" is probably a permissions issue, I cannot reasonably shut myself off from the possibility, and do not mean to sound as if I refuse to discuss the matter. All I am saying is that I have checked to make sure that I am the owner of the folder, and that I, as owner, have full control. I have followed the instructions in the link I provided in my first post exactly, so I have ruled out everything in that article, though perhaps there is something about permissions they did not mention.

I followed the instructions in the link that you provided, which were different from what I read in that they included sharing on top of permissions, but it made no difference. The problem remained. Thanks anyway.

Hi Blindman6,

This procedure is not guaranteed (to be honest, it's mostly a guess), but it is a possibility and perhaps is worth a try (if none of the above worked, it's what I'd try next).

You probably have other folders in Music that work just fine. Choose a small one and make two copies. Then open each copy and select all and delete the contents. Rename the folders Amazon MP3 New and Civ New. Next go to the two problem folders. In turn, open each and select all and copy - specifically do it this way rather than copying the folder itself. Then go to the newly renamed folders and paste the contents to each as appropriate. See if you have the same problem with these new folders or if this resolves the problem. If the problem is resolved, you can delete the old folders, rename the new folders, and you should be all set. If not, we'll have to dig deeper.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Rich,

I tried following the instructions for the clean boot, but got sporadic results. After disabling all services and then reenabling them per the instructions I was not able to see any difference, so I tried changing the startup programs instead. This for a while worked, and I was beginning to suspect that Google Desktop was somehow causing the problem (because it was the one that if disabled would coincide with the problem disappearing). To be safe, I triple checked this, doing three restarts, and on the third the problem reappeared even with Google Desktop off. I then went back and started all over again, with the problem briefly disappearing when I turned off a set of startup programs, but then reappearing before I could identify which one was responsible.

I also thought temporarily today that it might be due to my external hard drive, where I regularly copy these music files, back and forth to use on another computer's iTunes, and because I found that the problem temporarily disappeared some time after I had unplugged my hard drive, but then it returned a few hours later after I had restarted my computer (though not the first time I had restarted it since removing the hard drive, and not while performing the tests using msconfig).

I'm sorry that my findings seem rather erratic, but I can assure you of two things I saw: 1) that it disappeared some time after my hard drive was removed and remained gone until after a later restart, and 2) for a brief time I was able to control the problem by disabling Google Desktop on start up and then restarting to remove the problem, and enabling Google Desktop and then restarting to bring the problem back. But then, without making any other changes that I am aware of, the problem came back.

I have not yet tried a system restore or anti-virus scan.

Lorien,

There are 5 folders in my Music folder: Amazon MP3, Civ, Classical, iTunes, and Playlists. Amazon MP3, Civ, and iTunes are the ones I cannot rename. The other two are fine.

Here is what I just tried related to your suggestion (refer back to my first post to understand the particular folder hierarchy):
I created a new folder and named if Amazon MP3 1, then went into Amazon MP3 and tried to cut out Vladimir Horowitz, but I received a Destination Folder Access Denied error. So, I cut out Horowitz Plays Chopin_Volume 2, put that in Amazon MP3 1, and then cut out Vladimir Horowitz, put that in Amazon MP3 1, and then put Horowitz Plays Chopin_Volume 2 in Vladimir Horowitz. Thus, I had successfully recreated Amazon MP3 with a new name. I then deleted Amazon MP3 (which took a surprising long amount of time), and renamed Amazon MP3 1 to Amazon MP3.
For Civ I did the same thing, although I didn't receive a Destination Folder Access Denied error at any point.

Now, the strange thing is that I can now rename iTunes, which had previously been the other folder having trouble. I am about to restart my computer to see if the problem returns, and then I will also try putting my external hard drive back into my computer and restarting, and see if that causes any problems. Just in case, I will give it a few days to fester before I report back.

If this fixes it, I would be pleased, but I am still nonetheless extremely curious to understand what has been happening to my computer these past few days.

Hi Blindman6,

That sounds like good news and hopefully it means some progress has been made and maybe it is even resolved. I agree with checking things out for a few days before adding in a new factor so we can tell if the problem is or isn't the new factor. Be sure you reboot a couple of times in between (in case you normally keep your computer on or in sleep/hibernate mode) as that is likely to be what will most probably regenerate the problem if it is still a problem. And try using the files in those new folders to make sure they work properly as well.

I can't figure out why deleting those two other folders "fixed" iTunes, but let's not question our good fortune. Perhaps there was something in one of those old folders that way having a problematic effect on the others (especially since you say it took an unusually long time to delete one of the folders - and even though something like that isn't supposed to happen) - but to me that suggests malware, so if this works (and even if it doesn't), we should check your system to make sure it is clean (as mentioned earlier by Richard).

Update and run a full scan with whatever security software you are currently using. Then try to run anti-malware programs (in safe mode with networking if necessary). To fix this problem (if it is a problem) download, install, update, and run full scans with the following two programs: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html. You may also want to try the new, free Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Microsoft-Security-Essentials-Download-131683.html (with the caveat that only ONE AV program can be installed and running on your system at any one time). Use removal tools when appropriate http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2009/05/05/comprehensive-list-of-uninstallers-or-removal-tools-for-antivirus-software/. You may also want to try the free Avira at: http://www.free-av.com/ and Avast at: http://www.avast.com/index. Reboot after completing all the scans.

Personally, I recommend at the end that you keep MSE, Malwarebytes, and Spybot installed with MSE as your primary AV/AM/AS program running in real time and periodically (every few weeks or monthly) running the others to catch anything MSE might have missed - it's what many here use and is what we commonly suggest, but the decision is up to you. They are all free, so it will cost you nothing and even if you paid for whatever you are currently using, replacing it with a better option will improve things and it won't really be a waste of money as you will have better protection than you paid for and will not have spent even an extra dime getting it (even if it may feel like a waste if you paid for a subscription you are no longer going to use and can't get refunded).

I hope this helps. If not, try the System Restore Richard also recommended (even if it means you may have to redo a lot of what you just did). If the problem persists, we may need to get a bit deeper into troubleshooting to try to find and resolve the underlying cause.

Good luck!

Lorien,

Bad news, unfortunately. Right after I did the reboot that I said I would do in my last post, everything went back to the way it was before, and I cannot currently rename/move/delete any of the folders because of the same, original error. I will next consider all of the scans that the two of you have recommended, though that may not be until later this weekend, week, or next weekend. I will report back with what happens.

What really confuses and intrigues me most about this issue is how sporadic it seems, from it temporarily going away for no apparent reason, to the times when changes to one folder will alter the problems I experience with the other folders. This is what I find most puzzling.

My Computer

Hi Blindman6,

Sorry to hear that. To be honest, we're a bit confused ourselves given what hasn't worked. But there are still the scans and the System Restore to try and, if that doesn't work, we'll come up with something else. We will eventually find some way to resolve this - it just may take a bit more time and effort than we had originally hoped.

Remain hopeful - we won't give up on you.

Good luck!

System Restore was made for problems like this. If you have the restore points, dont forget to give it a try.
