I have attempted to run sfc scannow from the command prompt, but get an error message telling me that I have to be "administrator". My login is my first name and in the identity box the title "administrator" appears below my name. But this fact is apparently not recognized by the computer when I try to log in and run sfc scannow. Any suggestions?

Are you running command prompt as admin?
You have to right click and select run as admin to run SFC.
