Searching

I have a new problem, when I have a folder open and I type the first letter in the search box, Windows Explorer shuts down and closes all windows?

This is new, and I did recently run Windows Update and did some updating.

Any ideas?

Lets get you working and then we worry about the consequence.
With a system restore, go back to when you were working. I guess before the updates. Go back a few days before the updates.

I tried that twice, going for a third try, Got error message no files were changed, try again?

Try again, but I dont think that it will work.

If the above doesn't work, try rebuilding the Search Index to see if some type of index corruption or problem may be causing the problem. Here's how: Rebuilding the Search Index in Windows Vista - How-To Geek.

If that doesn't work, then let's check some of your system files:

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many).

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning Windows explorer shutdown or search (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. They may help us identify the cause of the problem and from there find some type of solution.

Ran sfc /scannow got a cbs and cbs.persist files. Notepad would not let me save as, Explorer stopped working. Tried to attach the files but after hitting browse, the screen just went away. A could cut and paste int a reply. but its a lot of text.
Saved as a Word doc but one is 52mb, too large to attach.

Ran chkdsk /f /r all looked OK "Volume is clean"

Did not see anything in Event Viewer about Explorer shutting down.

A lot of this is above my head, I looked at the cbs files not sure what I
am looking at?

Looked at Rebuilding the Search Index in Windows Vista The search came up but did not look like the example. Went to files/folders but the first character sut me down again.

Should I paste the cbs files in a reply or is it too much text?
At this point with my knowledge I am looking at FORMAT C: and starting over.

Also any opinions on updates, at dinner I was with some people who are of the
opinion NEVER use MS Updates, nothing but trouble, right now I concour.

I do not agree about the updates. Updates are a problem when not installed correctly. Do not have the updater install automatically. Set it to manual and when you get several, as on Patch Tuesday (Second Tuesday of the Month) install a few at a time, test then install a few more.

I agree with Richc46, you must keep your computer up to date. I have just spent the afternoon fixing a computer for someone that thought the same as your friend.
I would also agree to set it to notify you when updates are ready and install them in small batches to help find errors if there are any.

I'm back had to reinstall Vista, would not boot at all last night or this AM.
Thanks for the advice on Updates.

How do you determine which to install or are they all needed.

I hacve it on manual update now.

Still wish I new what the heck happened to cause all this.

Optional are just that optional.
All the others if you install one or two at a time you should not have a problem.

I would install all recommended updates for Windows.
