it tells me that I have 74 junk files and 142 registry errors can someone please tell me

Auslogics Disk Defragment only shows the number, and not what they are, so you have to buy their boosting software!

I personally don't like CCleaner. I personally will never, ever use it. Although it is slightly (and I mean slightly) safer than a full out "Registry Cleaner", we have still had users coming here for help, where they have used CCleaner, and deleted too much, and we simply could not fix it, and they had to reformat. Not for me thank you very much!

These keys and values are perfectly fine as they are, causing no problems. Just what is the point in risking everything...for nothing?

As I said in my initial post, I use Ccleaner. It is safe for use other than registry. That is why I suggested to use it just to analzye, so we would know where the potential problem was.

That being said a very respected MVP in Seven Forums, says that Ccleaner is good for all purposes. I personally, do not like fooling with reg unless required.

Hello again!

CCleaner is safer than most tools, because it has slightly fewer options, and only includes the ones it is most sure about. However, there is one crucial thing to remember. Not every entry showing up is not in use. Some of them are asking "Do you still use this? It might cause a few seconds delay over the day.". If you remember this, and scrutinise every registry key carefully, only deleting what you are 100% sure is junk, you are fine.

Also, when looking at the Files section, scrutinize every single option. For every option you are not sure about, uncheck it. At that point, you come run the Files section happily. Following the previous rule, you can run the Registry Section happily.

If you check everything, you will not be happy! If you are not sure about any entries, then this tool isn't really for you. There are better, safer tools out there. However, if you can, then this tool is fit for all purposes.

I personally cannot be bothered to waste such time. I use the safer tools I can run and leave, and a few hundred remaining entries are causing me no harm.

TY Rich for that analysis. I would be interested to learn more about what the safer tools are.

Hello!

I use Auslogics Disk Defragment. You already use this. Excellent!

I use Temp File Cleaner (TFC). This is only deleting temp files. These are basically guaranteed junk files. TFC will often purge 3GB off a system, and 250MB-500MB EXTRA after a CCleaner full run.

tfc_icon.png
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) - Download here or here - Homepage
Why? This will remove unneeded temporary files from your system, make automated scans that follow run faster, and save you time. Many infections also load from a temporary file location.
  • Download TFC to your desktop, or other location.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

I run this monthly. That is my system in perfect order!

Have just downloaded CCleaner and looked at the results.

Registry Section first:

Missing Shared DLLs looks alright. On my system only. Can't guarantee for anyone else.
Unused file extensions: It is trying to delete some of my extensions! Looking down the list, I see several ones I use rarely, but do use! Fixing all of those would force me to reinstall about 6 programs!
The rest I didn't properly look at. Most are alright to delete, I think.

Oh! It wants to delete a whole key from one of my own programs, one which I have written, in the Obsolete Software Key section! How rude!

Files:

Here are the checkboxes I would uncheck if this were my system. I assume that the default unchecked are left unchecked:

Every Internet Explorer one.
Every Windows Explorer one.
Windows Log Files
Chkdsk File Fragments would make no difference for me, I have none; Found001 on C:\. But I would uncheck that.
Memory Dumps.
Clipboard.
Empty Recycle Bin.

In fact, that was not what I expected! I would only remove Temporary Files.

This is personal preference. TFC only removed Temporary Files from the start, and it does it better.

Well, I don't know what you think, but my little trial here hasn't made he use CCleaner any more!

This is truly a great forum. There is a small core of volunteers that offer help to other members and in return we get a wonderful feeling of satisfaction. In addition, we learn a little now and then. In this case, I picked up a great suggestion. That I will try and see how it works out for me..

On my registry portion of CCleaner the only problem per the analyis is a large number of unused file extensions, which I have not cleaned, since I do not think that the results would be worthwhile.

I used TFC and like it. It cleaned up a lot of additional files that ccleaner would have missed.
The only question, is it possible to save cookies, for sign in etc?

Hello Rich!

Sorry for the delay. It looks like the new version does  It didn't use to. I shall have a little look into it, and chat with the developer, and see if a separate version/checkbox can be made, as it is very annoying!
