Solved Notebook not recognising/finding CD/DVDs in the player

What bad, bad,habit?

A friend has a notebook - CD/DVD player [Optical Player] inclusive. Problem is that when she puts in a disk, the unit doesn't 'see' it, and it does not appear as a 'Device with removable storage' under Computer.

I have a feeling that this is a problem with the CD/DVD player driver......

Any other suggestions??

In the meantime, I will get her to install and run Piriform Speccy, here;

The best way to start is to try and update the driver, from device manager.
Check disk drives
Look for any yellow markers in device manager.

Be sure she tries with several discs to be sure that is not the problem.

press Windows key and R
Type regedit, and then click OK.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

.....that did the trick, and surprisingly quickly too. A simple answer to what was a perplexing problem....still don't know what or how it was caused, but much testing since the 'fix' has resulted in no more 'misbehaving' by the Laptop.....and a very happy Lady friend.

Thanks too to others who suggested alternative solutions, but she took what seemed to her, to be the simplest route to resolving her problem....
