Admin account issue

Hi,

I do not have much info about OS hence this problem. I have windows vista home premium 32 bit installed on my laptop. There is only one user and therefore definitely with admin status (I also confirmed this by checking User Accounts in Control Panel). However, when I run certain applications (eg. MATLAB), it does not open by clicking on it. I have to right click and select 'Run as Administrator' to access it.

Another instance: When I tried changing the 'hosts' file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts to block certain websites on my web browser(firefox), it displayed a message saying that I do not have the rights and I have to contact the administrator.

As of what I understand, its treating this Admin account as a standard user account atleast in some cases. Please let me know how do I resolve this so that all admin privileges are available in this account.

Welcome
That run as administrator is put in place by the software. It is meant as a convenience. If you are in a regular users account, you can still run the software. There is no way to change that behavior.
Other files are system files and you are denied access, since you are just the owner and MS felt that you would damge the OS. You can give yourself permission, but I would suggest that you leave it the way it is.

Thank you Richard ! :)
That is very informative and helpful. If you dont mind I would still like to know how to give myself the permission to edit that system file.

Thank you for your patience !

That hidden administrator is an emergency method. Sometimes it may be needed to solve problems that do not have other solutions. So its good that you know about it.
