PC Loses printer

I have Vista Home Premium on my computer with a HP Deskjet F4140 connected directly with USB. Frequently when I try to print my printer is not installed. I am able to turn off the printer wait a few seconds power it back on and it shows up in printers and I am able to use it. I haven't figured any specific thing that causes it to happen. My only other device plugged into USB port is my wireless mouse/keyboard and I never have connection problems with them. I read a few posts that told to check power settings of the USB ports and they are not set to power down.

Does anybody have suggestions?

(with the print/scan forum closed i'm guessing this is the place for my question)

A couple of things wrong with that suggestion.
I can not troubleshoot something that is not there; and when checking on my computer "troubleshoot" is not an option anywhere.

Sorry but thats a no brainer
2. Make sure that the HP Deskjet F4140 printer printer is turned on
Also a no brainer
3. Make sure that when you are clicking the print option you select and highlight the HP printer you want to use and print with and not some other printer that is in the offline mode.
I am unable to select a printer that does not show in the printers folder, it goes thru install when I turn in on.
4. Check the Dock of the HP Deskjet F4140 printer if there is any problem.
There is no dock.

For USB problem you can change the USB of printer and check.
I've been through the HP site and had no luck other than being told it is a Windows issue......they all love to pass the buck

Hello Weriley,

First thing, try uninstalling all of the USB devices listed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in Device Manager, and then reboot. Windows should automatically go through several of its "Discovered New Hardware" routines and re-setup all of the USB devices for you.

If that doesn't solve the problem, as you mentioned it may well be the power settings of the USB ports itself.

For Power settings of the USB ports, this link may help you.

How to Change USB Power Settings

Thanks
