Theme changed suddenly, no system restore

My taskbar appearance has changed to the old version look (an off-white color bar). It used to be blue. I've tried to change the appearance in control panel and also a system restore but still nothing.
Also, the driver for sounds and network do not start. Even the security settings, I keep onr eceiving notifications that it is off. I tried to open it, but it says an error. I also did System Restore, but the system restore says there is an error to the shadow copy blah blah, and the next and back buttons are grayed out.
I tried to reformat it using the disc but it says error loading the drivers. Other software is fine, I can open Word, play games, but the sound icon has a red cross on it and also the network icon, it doesn't detect the wifi network.

Hello and welcome to the forum...

I would like for you to run a full scan with your AV...
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes, free version...

Also let see if this will help...

Run a sfc /scannow here is how..
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

When finished if there are any errors then run it 3 times...
Report back and tell us how it is going.

I agree with the above. Make sure that your AV is updated before the scan as well as Malwarbytes.
I think that the problem will turn out to be a virus. If so post again and let one of our experts help solve your problem.

Thanks, I appreciated your suggestions though those things doesn't helped me at all. I resorted into reformatting my laptop, then buy Windows 7 instead.

My Computer

I had the same problem, twice now. Some months ago exactly the same thing happened. My appearence was set using vista home basic, all very nice, new style boxes, black side bar. Semi transparent gadget bar etc.. Suddenly changed by itself. All boxes went to old style, nasty graphics and sidebar white, gadget bar white and no longer transperant. In the appearence control there was only four options, windows classic, windows standard and two other i think high resolution and black & white. None very nice. Couldnt figure out how to change it. But eventually i did. Now, several months later it's happened again. Problem is i cant remember what i did to solve it. Tried systems restore, not solving. Bizarre thing is that if i switch user to guest, that appearance is fine as it was supposed to be.

Now trying virus scan as advised above but any other advice would be appreciated.

My Computer

In addition, should point out that Windows vista home basic as an option for appearence has GONE from the dropdown options. If i go into guest user, and into appearance set up, i have the full works of vista, colours, themes etc and it's still there in the drop down optiions... but in the normal admin account where the appearence has changed by itself, go into appearance set up and it's very limited, no colour changes, themes yes but the entire layout and options, drop downs etc are completely different .

I just cant remeber what i did to solve this same problem last time but when i did i remeber thinking how easy it was.

My Computer

so... since this post above, which was not too long ago i found some similar threads with the same issues and tried some of the advice.

Firstly virus scan... scanned, nothing, unresolved.

Secondly a command prompt opening cmd ( incidentally if you are reading and need to do this yourself be sure to locate the cmd application in the systems32 folder and 'run as administrator' or you will not be able to use it)

so ran the sfc /scannow command in cmd. result was that windows has some corrupt files, some fixed and some were unable to be repaired. followed instructions to try and view the logged results but was continuously told i do not have permission to view results.

gave up.

rebooted

everything back to how it was.... lovely.

:D
