Drive D memory decreasing rapidly

My drive D is a partition from my main drive. Its about 12.8GB. Recently the memory decreases rapidly whenever I moved files into it.
Eg: I moved a 10MB file into the D drive, but the memory decreases by 0.01GB.
This happens everytime when I move files. I don't really mind if the files are more than 100MB but then hey, it decreases by 0.01GB even I move a 1KB note into it!

Moreover the free space doesn't increase when I move files out of it, but when I move back the files into it, the free space decreases again!
Eg: Originally I had 2.00GB free space. I move a 100MB file from it, it remains 2.00GB; but when I move it back, the memory becomes 1.90GB!

This problem is scratching my head. Anyone had solutions?

After looking at WinDirStat, I found out there's a thing there called <Unknown>. It eats up about 180MB, which I think is the main problem. Anyone know what it is?

No one is going to know what unknown is, click on it, what shows then.

Thats fine
Read my first post, get process explorer. It will show memory usage, which is even better.

Give me a picture of the task manager with the big memory users on top, so I can see it.

I wanted to be sure that you had no malware or virus as well as no forgotten programs on the HD and you do not. So here is my answer for the HD
How to Fix Shrinking Disk Space in Vista » My Digital Life

For the memory take this test.
Dont take shortcuts, test the sockets as suggested

Download memtest86 and test RAM

www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Run for 8 passes
Ifpasses try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
Iffails do the same for 8 passes.

This is going to lead nowhere but its free, make an SFC scan, too

quote : My drive D is a partition from my main drive. Its about 12.8GB

That sound like a Recovery partition to me.
Can you verify that ?

If it is a recovery partition, you have a more serious problem than just a mystery.

Your Recovery D partition is set up by your computer manufacturer in case of serious problems in your system.
You use that to restore your sytem.
You are NOT supposed to touch it.... not to add or remove anything to or from it.
Have you been using the D drive for scheduled File Backups ?
If that is the case, call you computer manufacturer, tell them the situation.......
1. Ask them for a set of recovery DVDs to re-install Vista from it, if you don't have a set made yourself.
2. Ask them how to remove the backup files or any items that are NOT supposed to be there.
They created the recovery partition, they know perfectly how to take care of
it. Let them teach you how to.
