Hi! I just recorded a clip with Hypercam and it was 1 minute 58 seconds long, and it appears to be 1.96 GB in size... which I find odd.

Bottom line is that the AVI takes more room than some other formats
The .avi is changed into a different format so that DVD players can read it.
I am not an AVI expert that can tell you how much space it should take, but it would be more than expected.

I'm pretty sure when I've been torrenting sizes are less than that, I think I have a 20 minute long video that's only about 160MB.

To that I would reply that the large avi is uncompressed, you are probably comapring it with compressed videos

This may give an indication of expected use per Gb?
You have to take into account, things like, how many Mpixels, what resolution etc, check out the link.

AVI is an uncompressed format. It stores every single frame as a separate image. Many frames have only minor changes. A compressed format only stores the changes (basically speaking) whereas an AVI will re-store the whole frame. The advantage of this is perfect quality, and perfect conversion to other formats.
