Hello

My system is vista home premium 64 bit and I had 4 gigs an was able to upgrade to 8 GB's. On a 32 bit I think the max is 4 Gb's but if you have 3 gigs already it might be 6. Check this out.

1. Click start
2. Right click on computer.
3. Click properties and your screen will appear, about half way down there should be some words that are blue when you click that it will take you right to Hp or who ever installed the OS and there it will tell you how much ram you can put in your system...

Hi again,
The maximum for a 32bit system is 4Gb.

If you have a 64bit. then you can go a lot more in memory.

What americancritic was rightly pointing out, that if you go to 'online support' , as I do with my HP.
There is the model no, ram, mobo etc.
Usually it also indicates maximum ram for your particular machine, the number of slots etc,.

eMachines must not be set up like HP is then.

So putting 1 more gig will do nothing because it won't recognize it?

Hi,
If you have 3Gb already, and going off previous post by Ex_Brit you will end up with about 2Gb.
This is the general guide, that some Ram is used for 'computer uses', before, can I say, you are able to get your hands on it!
This is unfortunate & your computer does not perform as fast as you think it should.
However, I would have assumed that by having 4Gb ram, if you end up then with 3Gb, it is going to operate better than only having 2Gb to go at?

As far as e machines, this link may help you:-

If you are wanting more than 3Gb to use in a computer,I would say you would have to upgrade to a 64bit, as Ex _Brit states, you can then virtually 'go through the roof'!

With 192Gb maximum your questions will be answered, before you ask them!LoL!

The computer originally came with 2gb. It has 4 places to put ram in. 2 are filled with 1gb each. and I filled the other 2 with 512mb sticks = 1gb. So I have 3. So It is pointless to add another then..........

The only configurable 32-bit PC I had was my old XP machine and it came with 2gb of RAM for starters. I upgraded it to 4gb and I recall being disappointed that Windows only detected just under 3gb.

However, when I replaced my graphics card with a higher-end one it suddenly was detecting 3.2+ GB (I can't remember the exact figure), so I would say 4gb would probably benefit you, but any more would simply be a waste.

Hi,
I've just done a oem restore on my daughters Dell 1545 laptop 3Gb Ram installed.
Upgraded to EI9, a number of security programs downloaded, that's all so far.
Downloaded Speccy for details, here's the one for the Ram to see what's used.
Covers what we have been discussing.

And with 32 bit, you will most likely only have 3.25 GB recognized.

Plus one to ILF..... But it depends on opur gpus too.... But having 1gig cards on a 32bit os is just hooky.

Also, currently the mobos limit the max ram to abgout 24Gigs for a commercial board, more on server boards
