Solved Task Manger blocked

Let me see if I can explain what is happening with my friend's computer. His wife has been playing willynilly with her laptop and had a major infection of trojans and spyware. I have managed to clean it up, but there is something still blocking the task manager. The menu item shows up in the correct places, but when I click on it, the activity indicator shows up for about a second and then goes away. Nothing else happens, no error messages or anything. The computer seems to be running much better than before I started working on it, but the problem with the task manager leads me to believe there is another underlying problem that I haven't located yet. I have tried various online scans, including the one from Microsoft and even though it says it found some problems, no details given, it can not fix them. I have a subscription to Nod 32 and installed it, but after doing so, it says it can not run because of restrictions placed on the computer. Any ideas or suggestions about where to look next? I would appreciate any help you folks can give me.

Well, I followed all of your suggestions and the scan with Malwarebytes did the trick. It found nearly 800 items that it repaired and one of the was the Best Malware Protection file that kept hiding itself. Everything seems to be working just fine. I certainly appreciate the advice and the help.
