Save as/in Wordpad, not Works

Greetings one and all!

I just read your new post here concerning the rules, and I have a problem finding any thread having to do with the questions I have. I am sorry. I know it is wasting your time to repeat q&a's and I do apologize, I just can't seem to find the originals. :o

In the meantime, you are all wonderful, and I can't thank you enough for caring to share your amazing wealth of knowledge in a bounty of interests and questions. I truly do appreciate each of you and again, thank you for your kindness!
That said, I (again) am not sure where to post this question, but hoping I at least get the section correct.

I do not have M.S. Word or Office, but equipped with my H.P. lappy came Microsoft Works. I don't care for it very much and have used Wordpad for all my computing years, which I like very much. After playing way with the M.S. Works, I finally was able to change the font color, but even that setting took me much too long to find. Anyway, when I just jot down notes or letters or any text document, no matter where I tell it to 'save as', when I open it again, there it is in Works again, not Wordpad. I'm sure most of you enjoy the depths of Office and even Works, but I just need a simple program like Wordpad and I was wondering how to stop saving in Works instead of Wordpad. I've spent way too much time already trying to figure it out, since I'm sure it's a simple click here instead of click there, and am hoping one of you knowledgeable dears will point it out to me.

As always, truly, thank you kindly, in advance.

Blessings,

Grammy

P.S. I am going to try to change my name also, didn't realize how silly it would look for all of you to be calling me Grammy...lol. Sorry. :p

Hi Grammy welcome once again to Vista Forum.
I think I know what you mean & what you would like to achieve.
So will have a go & see if I can get it right? If not slap my wrist & send me to bed early without cookies!

This is done through vista premium as yourself, except I deleted Microsoft Works & have Microsoft Word.
So therefore without me having Works it may indeed not Work!
I enclosed some screenshots of what I did to try & get it to work for you. Assuming that My Word would react in the same way as your Works. Phew! With me so far?

Once a file has been created in WorPad & Save in/as ...Documents
I found that if I go direct into Documents to Open that file, it opened in Word. (Maybe your equivalent Works)
No good right?

But if I opened WordPad. File >> Open >> Documents >> Click File >> opened in WordPad NOT Word (Works)
It worked for me, so I think, I hope, that was what you were wanting?

Hope it works ok.

Apologies screenshots seem to have gone walkabouts, will try & find & re-post

Go to the folder where your wordpad file is saved to > right click at the RTF wordpad file > at the popup box, click Open With > click Choose Default Program > scroll to find and click Wordpad > click OK when done.

From here on, all your rtf wordpad files will open in Wordpad.

If you do not have Open With option, here is how to include it in your right click context menu :

Use Option One , step #2 ..... To Enable the Context Menu and follow the simple instructions.

Thank you once again for helping me Kesume! I just found out the most amazing thing while I was trying your ideas. I accidentally learned how to do screenshot! I have searched about that forever and today thought I'd try using that fn key instead of the control and/or shift key. It worked!!!! I did manage to get a shot that I was able to paste into Wordpad, but I didn't save it there, but will give 'er a whirl here and try to paste it in to show you what my options are in the drop-down box when I 'save as'. Here goes...NOTHING!!! It will paste just dandy into the fresh Wordpad page, but zip here!
So, my options are:
Rich Text Format (RTF)
Text Document
Text Document - MS-DOS Format
Unicode Text Document

In closing, I don't know what the Unicode one means, but I believe that I've pretty much tried the other three and seems no matter what I do with it, it is going to open up in Works anyway. I thought maybe there was a setting.
I am thrilled that I stumbled upon the fn/print screen! I don't know why it won't paste here though.
Aside from this, I had once thought about uninstalling or removing the Works program altogether, but was told there might be shared files in there w/something I may actually want or need, so didn't do that.
Anyway, if you know, which of the drop-down choices should I use?

Again and again, thank you!!!

Grammy

hi Grammy, Didn't work that way? Mmmm! No cookies for me tonight then?
In my screenshot you will see I saved in Rich Text Format (RTF), but saving as 'Text Document' is also OK!
I will continue to think on that one grammy, obviously Works has some swing on WordPad.
Sorry it didn't totally work out for you. But at least now you get to play with Screenshot?
Thank you for letting me know your findings. Do post us back with any updates.
Cheers.

Hi again, again kesume! I was going thru my mails with all the places I've posted here and I just answered one of your very first ones to me about Malwarebytes just a little while ago. Though I'm in the wrong post here, I will tell you that I did get it downloaded and it is scanning full as I write this post.
I am now stumped with Screenshot! I can't win...lol. I can paste it into Wordpad all day long, but can't paste it in here! How come? I also searched around the other day seeking where I might change my screen name and never did figure out where, so am still grammy today, but am thinking a better name would be always stumped about something...:p
Will look forward to hearing from you and now I will get back to my scanning.
Blessings to you kesume,
Grammy
