Task scheduler

Hi
I was trying to run Defrag and nothing happened, I checked task manager services to see if task scheduler was doing its bit. It said task scheduler was stopped so I right clicked on it and i got a message that access is denied. I was signed on as an administrator.
Any ideas what to do next?

Hi richc46
I tried setting up the real admin as your instructions, that worked OK. Again I checked task manager services to see if task scheduler was doing its bit. It said task scheduler was stopped so I right clicked on it and i got a message "Unable to start service" with the words below - "The operation could not be completed. The system cannot find the file specified."
Any more ideas please.

For another test. Set up a new user Adminsitrator account. Lets see where the problem lies. See if you can access from this new account.
Also try an SFC
System Files - SFC Command

Suggestion only....

Start button > in search box, type task scheduler > Enter > expand ( click the pointer in front of ) Task scheduler library > expand Microsoft > expand Windows > click Defrag > middle column, right click at Scheduled D... >Properties > Triggers tab > does it say " enabled " ? If not, click that line > click Edit. Check the settings there including the Enabled box. > OK > also check what are being set in Conditions and Settings tabs > click OK each time afterwards.

Will that help ?

typed task scheduler in earch box and got a message, can't find task, check word is spelled correctly.
So not a lot of luck with that tip.

Hi richc46
Did a sfc, got lots of verify etc in cbs log. tried task scheduler again, same message. Task scheduler summary window opened saying Task status and active status tasks - Reading data failed.
Any more tests I can do please?

If any unrepaired errors in SFC, run three times.

If there are no errors or you ran it three times and it is not repaired
Run a full and updated anti virus scan
Download and run a full and updated scan with malwarebytes. Always full scan not quick scans.
If these are negative, do you have a Vista Install DVD?

Hi
Did 3 x sfc and no integity violations found, full Norton system scan run today. Do you recommend any malware downloads to run. I do not have the Vista DVD, it is a legal copy of vista brought with the PC.

Do you have stuff that you want to save, just in case?

Next try a system restore from before the problem began if you know when that was.

Did three system restores, one month ago, 3 weeks ago and 1 week ago, none of them worked, got message none of system parameters changed.
I think the problem was in jan 2011 when I took the PC to PCworld to have a virus removed, at that time Windows Defender did not work and they could not make it work so I installed Norton, not realising defrag was not working until PC started to run slow and crash.
Any more ideas?

Try this go to search by the start button, type the word services
In services make sure that task scheduler is set to automatic.

. I think when the nerds touched the computer they made changes to the path of the service. Go to search and type task scheduler and then right click and then properties. Whats the path that is shown?

Did you type those words?
Then as soon as it popped up you right clicked?
or
Did not pop up at all?

Hi richc46
Thanks for bearing with me to try and sort out my problems with defrag. I got so fed up with the ongoing problems on my PC (crashed quite often, the video driver and WLAN kept stopping and it was running slow) I have brought another Dell. Thanks again, your knowledge was very helpful, wish I had brought the PC to you in the first place to fix the original virus.
Regards Ian

Sometimes a few dollars is well worth it. Trying to fix the old computer could have taken hours and possibly it would never have been fixed. You are now all set to enjoy the Summer with your new computer. Good luck
