Media Player will not open

Hey folks. I'm hoping someone can help me with a Media Player problem...
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit, and use WMP for playing/ripping CD's,
playing audio files from my hard drive, etc. Recently, the program has stopped
working completely. It is set up as the default player for audio files, but when I
double-click a file, nothing happens at all. I try to right-click/"open with," etc., still
nothing. I try to open WMP from the task bar, start menu, directly from the program files/windows media player/wmplayer.exe -- all to no avail.
Of course, my first thought was to uninstall/reinstall, but as I'm sure you know, that
can't be done in Vista (unless someone knows some back-door trick?).
I'd appreciate any suggestions for a new approach.

Mine has been doing the same thing today. Double click and nothing happens. My Dad's laptop was doing the same thing a few days ago, but he had a service pack update to put on, did that and it was working again. There's no update to put on, on mine so have no idea why it's not working!

The first thing to do with any problem is to be sure that Vist has all the updates and SPs

Suggestions :

1. Run a system file check. It is to look for corrupt files and repair them if found.

2. If file check cannot help, create another account with exactly the same privileges as this one > logon to the new account > can you play WMP in this account ?
If no issue with WMP in new account, then the old account must be corrupted.

Hi everyone

In addition to Richard's great advice, you can try this tool.
Be sure to create a restore point as advised.

Hope this helps.
