PC still seems slow after disk check & defragmentation

I've ran a disk check and defragmentation and the pc still doesn't seem as quick as it used to do, even though the defragmentation has taken the free space from 88.3GB free to 106GBfree. I've also disabled a lot of startup programs. It does seem slightly better, but not as quick as it used to. Jacee has just been helping me to get rid of viruses off it, so I know it's not a virus causing it. Any ideas? Thanks

It can be damage caused by the viruses that's slowing it down.
It can be a hardware problem with your hard drive or it's controller (on the mobo)
It can be memory problems.
It can be simply that the Windows installation is getting old and crotchety (sorta like me in the morning!).
It can also be other things, but we'll deal with that if these more common steps don't reveal anything.

The first step is to backup all your data - as you don't want to be caught with no backup and a failing HDD or OS.

Then I'd start with these free diagnostics:
I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

If that doesn't show a problem, then I'd suggest running a repair install of Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

You should try defragging with diskeeper home edition. You can download a free trial from their website. By far the best defragger.

Sorry to interrupt, but what makes it the "best defragger"?

Sometimes after a good clean up it will take a little time to load up the cache again.
If it was still slow after a day or so then I would think there was a problem but give it time to reload things first.

It did seem better a few hours later, and now it's running fine again. Can tell the difference straight away as it was SO slow before!

I just have one more quick question, if anyone can help please. The pc has 4 card readers (all different sizes) which show up on the pc as removable discs. The problem is, these always load at startup as the little icon appears in the taskbar. It seems to slow startup down. Just wondered if there was any way to stop them from loading up. Thanks

Soluto is a beta program that analyses startup procceses and helps you remove them safley, It helped me a little, but when I uninstalled it, the proccesess were restored.. It happens to some optimizing programs too.

Soluto, will tell you which drivers etc are not working correctly, especially at statrup. and slowing the system.
Many swear by it. I suggested it several times. Only one member used it and had problems. He had to use System Restore to get out of it. It is Beta, which means if you use it, you are testing for problems. The manufactuer would like to know about your problems, so it can be fixed.

I've just used Soluto on both the pc and laptop. Took a fair few things off the laptop startup which now takes 2:19min to boot. Not many things to be taken off the pc though (still can't get the removable discs to not load up) startup on this is now 3:14min and does still seem a bit slow, especially for example if there's a scan running.

I've done a sfc /scannow on both pc and laptop, they both say there are errors that cannot be fixed but have no idea what to do to fix this.

Usually if there is a scan going it will slow down your computer..If you want to you can schedule your scan for when you are going to be away, dinner time, or bed, or when you go out to wach your fav tv program..etc..Disable the startup scan programs, unless you are running them for the first time...I scan manually most of the time...I had start up issues rich can tell you I was getting times like around 10 min and had a wierd screen between welcome screen and Desktop....It was like a veil waiting to be lifted.... rich and the others helped me there....

As for the cards, do they read when you right after you boot up???
Let me look at something and I will get back to you...I was thinking it is a setting in the services.msc under removable storage....I think it is set to automatic and started..either it needs to be set to manual and started or automatic delayed and started if started is an option..

I hope I can help with this one for you...

rich. am i in the ball park with this????? BTW what does the little green squares mean????

When someone helps you, you give thanks by giving rep. You click on the upper right icon, that looks like a snow flake. Each square represents 100 rep points. As the rep points add up, you get badges. You got a badge already.
You cannot give twice, you must give to one other before giving again

Hope this answers your question, Tom
