Solved Unsolved Freezing w/ Event Log now!

I started a thread about this problem a while back but basically no one could figure out the problem or fix it, and now I have some more info. My computer freezes at random times and becomes totally unresponsive to any key combinations, but the mouse pointer can still move, and I have to hard reset it. The original thread is here with all the info I have about what happens: http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/290440-computer-freezes.html

So I've gone to Event Viewer and found all the errors and stuff that happened around when my last freeze happened. I saved them and attached it. If someone who knows what their doing better than I do could take a look at it I'd really appreciate it, this problem is soooo annoying. I know there are like 120 events there, but I think the one that's causing the problems is the one at 13:06:47 (arrange them by "Date and Time" to see it easier) for two reasons: 1st, after that one it starts showing events for startup (since I restarted my computer), and 2nd, when I clicked on "Event Log Online Help" for more info, it said that it was a serious system error, and couldn't tell me any more. Also, that's about the time it froze up.

Even if you can't tell me how to fix it, I'd love to just know what's wrong or what's causing it. Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Hi Adam
First Im surprised to see you back with the same problem. At your last visit I thought that you said that the problem was solved. I guess, we were wrong.
With your new information this is what I know. There is a problem with your DPS (Diagnositic Policy Services,) it has discovered a problem. In its attempt to inform you, it malfunctions and causes the freezes.
May I suggest, to test my thesis, go to services and turn off this service to see if the problem continues. The only unwanted effect of this action is that you will not be notified of a problem (but you are not anyway)
If this is the problem the ways to correct it would be:
System Restore
SFC command
or repair install.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
Although the above is a hunch, this is a real guess. It could be a specific component of the dps, viz, dps.dll
The driver is located in C:>Windows>system32>drivers. You may want to change the extension on the driver from .dll to bup and see if windows update sends you a new one. Make sure that windows update is set to receive drivers.

Warning.
I am not familiar with the effect of any of the suggestions that I am making. May I suggest a system restore before any action and understand you should be confident of the consequences of any actions taken.

Ya I thought it was fixed, but then it came up again. I tried to ignore it in the hopes it would go away (haha) but it's still flaring up. I'll try disabling the service like you said, and come back in a couple days with the results. Thanks for the idea. About SFC: is there any chance this could potentially mess up my system? I know it's supposed to fix it, but I've had bad experiences with doing things like this where I don't have as much control over what it does. I'll make a restore point before, of course, but I'd like to know all the risks of using SFC. And it's been way to long to use system restore, unfortunately. I actually tried that when it first started and it didn't fix it. And I don't have the Vista disc for my laptop, it was given to me and didn't include the disc.

Also, can you tell me what all those nfts errors mean (mostly at the end of the log, arranged by time)? I don't know if the problem is related, but there's enough of them to cause me concern.

Edit to my above post after you read it

________________________________________________________________________

I do not know of any problems with an SFC, I have suggested, as others have, many times. Always start with a system restore.

NTFS normally refers to Hard drive problems. A hard drive test should be taken if not already done so. If you have not taken a real hard drive test post and I will get you one. Not the chkdsk, that is of little help in this situation

May I also suggest that others may have different interpretation of the problem. If other suggestions are offered they may be correct. However, stay with one at a time. Follow my instructions, if they do not work move on to the next. You can also start with the others, but in this situation dont jump from one to another. That will just create more confusion.

Well, your idea to turn off DPS didn't work. Thanks anyway. I checked Event Viewer to see if I could compare the events to the last freeze and see if there were any the same, but the "unexpected shutdown" caused the file to become corrupt and unreadable, so there aren't any events from before the freeze. I ran SFC /verifyonly, but I can't make sense of the log, so I'll go ahead and just run it normally so that it repairs stuff too.

Thanks for the idea Tom. I've already cleared up and organized my startup programs as much as I can (or will haha; I like my programs :) ). It's a laptop, I think I'm gonna add that to my system specs on here so it's more evident. (you can see someones system specs by clicking it at the bottom left of their posts, just in case you didn't already know that. Well, assuming they've filled it out...) Overheating was my first thought as well, I've got two fans blowing on my rig constantly, as well as Core Temp, a program that displays CPU temperature (for each core; it's nifty) in my system tray and updates it in real time, my temp is fine, I don't see how the problem could be overheating unless that program is completely whacked.

Well it froze again during my sfc scan. It got to 64%. But when it froze I noticed a program in my tray that happened to show it had been doing something when it froze, and I remembered seeing it like that the last time it froze too. It's called WinPatrol (I think I've actually seen it referenced on this site) and it said it was checking my startup programs. I originally downloaded it to warn me when a program changed my hosts file (which it didn't) but I kept it anyway, not really using it, but still nice to have one more layer of protecting there. So I have uninstalled it, and I'll see if I get any more freezes, or if for some odd reason that was what was causing it.

I had a screen that was between the welcome screen at bootup and Desktop and it would sit there...I could use the mouse over it so it didnt lock up or nothing, but I got that resolved..

Hello

I'm sorry you are having so many problems with this, but I use the sfc /scannow all the time along with many others and I have never had a problem, plus it is very easy to do...

1. Click start...
2. Type cmd...
3. At the top of the popup list RIGHT click the cmd.exe and run it as administrator...
4. When the command box appears then type sfc /scannow, please notice there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash.

Do not use your computer or move your mouse around when it is scanning just let it run when it has finished if there are any errors then run the sfc 3 more times as it repairs more each time you run it.

Please let us know the sfc results...

@tom thanks, but it's not an overheating problem. I'm just using those fans to be extra sure it's not a contributing factor until I get this resolved.

@americancritic, thanks I tried that earlier and it froze in the middle of the verifying stage. Go figure. But I'm definitely going to run that tomorrow, along with reinstalling McAfee (unrelated issue). Or maybe just use a restore point to fix McAfee, I haven't decided which will be easier yet. But that's not important here haha. Thanks for the advice, it actually makes me feel better to know that someone else uses that command on a regular basis (or whatever) cuz I'm just wary of commands like that for some unexplainable reason. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just run it 3 times. No need to boot. If you still do not have all files repaired, zip us the cbs file. We have people, who may be able to make the repairs.

Um nope. I kinda wish I had. It would make it much easier to identify what's causing my freezes. Right now I'm just trying anything and everything I can in the hopes I eventually get it. I have no idea what triggered it starting, especially since I used a Restore Point to go back to when it wasn't freezing as soon as it started up, and that didn't fix it.
