Task Scheduler-auto shutdown

Hi,

I'm wondering if it is possible to automate shutdown when the system is idle and there is no network traffic, i.e no torrent downloads or streaming from another source.

Not sure if this would be overed in the "idle" setting within the Scheduler.

Also is there a way to disable the auto shutdown after windows has installed updates until the system is idle and not streaming, have been caught out a number of times watching a movie and then "no network connection"!!

I'm trying to keep bloatware to the minimum but if task sheduler cannot do this, any suggestions on what could?

in a nutshell I'm looking for Light's-out (WHS) for vista :)

I've managed to get that far, just hoping to not have it fixed to a time as with working shifts I'm up at random hours, that and I have a less tech savvy flatmate who wouldn't even know how to turn of the PC lol

Hello Tobi, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You could use the tutorial below to disable the automatic restart after Windows Updates have installed. You will still get a nag message to help let you know that you need to restart the computer to finish installing the updates though.

Windows Update - Enable or Disable Automatic Restart - Windows 7 Forums

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Shawn,

Unsure if you'll know this or not but if/when I get this shutdown sorted, if Task Scheduler forces the shutdown will this be a standard shutdown or will it also install the updates, i'm hoping for the later.

Thanks

If you create a task to shutdown the computer, it will do a normal shutdown of the computer for whatever time you set it to do so.

That is completely separate from Windows Updates. I would recommend to have Windows Update have enough time to download and install updates before the task to shutdown the computer to avoid shutting down the computer in the middle of downloading or installing updates though.

That hopefully shouldn't happen as I want the auto shutdown to only run when the network is not being used and/or if the CPU is idle. I just don't want the forced shutdown To ignore updating the o/s while shutting down the system.
