Also, here's an excerpt from a cool article I recently found for freeing up space like you want:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now here are some commands that you could use in the Command Prompt console in administrator mode in order to view and resize the space allocated for SVI (System Volume Information, related to System Resotre):
1. To see the space allocated and used for SVI:
- Open Command Prompt with “Run as Administrator” option
- Type in: vssadmin list shadowstorage
- You will see Used Space, Allocated Space and Maximum Space for SVI
2. To see the restore information stored therein:
- Use in the same console command: vssadmin list shadows
3. To resize the maximum allocated space:
- Type in command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[here add the drive letter]: /For=[here add the drive letter]:
/Maxsize=[here add the maximum size]
- E.g., vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=10GB
- You will see a prompt confirming resize done
- You can check the status again using the command discussed in point 1 above
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just be careful, I'd say don't resize it below 10GB in order to make sure it doesn't mess up your most recent Restore Point, because if you go lower and it get deleted, it'll suck if you end up needing one.
Also, I recommend just copying that command right into command prompt, because it kept saying "invalid command" when I tried to type it out myself, even though I could have sworn it was exactly the same. I think part of it might be case sensitive or something. Anyway. Hope this helps someone, it's nice for me to be able to see exactly how much space is being sucked up by restore points, and be able to reclaim that space at my leisure. Saved myself 30 gig.
