Boot Manager missing, No OS available

Hi, I know this subject has been covered alot, but in all my searches and in depth research, I have yet to find the solution.

I tried to install vista service pack 1,
It crashed my computer and prevented it from booting.
I then inserted my recovery disk.
booted from disk.
selected OS.
Ran Startup Repair
it "fixed" the problem
I restarted computer and it gave me the Bootmgr missing ctrl+alt+del spiel.
i tried to run recovery disk again. ALAS no OS to choose?
my error when trying to run startup repair again
cannot automatically repair.

why do i have no OS in the first place, and is there ANY other way to restore my Boot manager without losing my files?

i followed all those steps and my result was "successfully scanned windows installations.
total Identified windows installations: 0
the operation completed successfully.

Now what do i do?

Okay, well it was a long shot! Sorry but that's the only suggestion I can think of. Do you need help reinstalling Vista?

You can select to keep all of your files during the installation, I can't remember the exact procedure but there's definitely an option to move all of your files to C:\Windows.old

Just remember not to format your hard drive!
