This is supposed to be easy-help!

OK , I've solved many many many harder computer/software/network -you name it problems before but this for some reason-well i'm stumped.

I've downloaded some Mp3s (actually there were losseless before) and yes i downloaded them legally and converted them to mp3s.

My question is this:i can not for the world of me figure out how to EDIT 'Details' of each Mp3 as it DOES NOT let me do it.
I tried taking ownership and messed with various other things and still -no go.It's driving me crazy :sa: because I like playing Audiosurf (a game in which you race to your own songs) and in order to be able to put scores online I need to be able to rename each song from within the 'Edit' tab so that Audiosurf doesn't say ,for example 'Unknown Artist-Metallica-Fade to Black'.

Does anyone have ANY ideas on this subject? What else would you recommend? I've tried 3rd party software like Mp3 Tag (i think that's the name) but it didn't do the trick.

Thank you in advance and I apologize if this was asked before.

Thank you but after reading the instructions from the website you've attached the link for ,i could NOT find "Detail View" the poster was talking about.Actually i could not find any of the 'steps' that were suggested , as if though I had a completely different OS (which I don't).
I do thank you for trying to help me though.

You may be interested in this, it's a pretty nice little piece of software (buy or trial, unfortunately) dBpoweramp Music Converter

As for what Tom pointed you to, "detail view" that just means you click on the button on the top left that says "views" (see the attached picture) and select the "details" view.

Shadowjk :

'What is the default program used for opening the MP3's? - Should be Windows Media Player'

I use Winamp.

Also , Slammer : i have gotten to the "detail view" part as shown in the tutorial on the page attached by Tom but that's about as far as I got.Where the poster explains to 'You can click on the "More..." option to get the complete list...' , well that's where I get stuck.I simply do NOT have the option/tab/box for 'More'.

I will give dBpoweramp Music Converter a try if that's my last resort.I just never had this happen before. Thanks for all your help.

Okay Well right click the file you want to edit and then click on Open with... Choose windows media player

Then go to the library tab

this will bring up your Music Library

after that pick the song you want to edit then right click the column you want to edit e.g Artist and click Edit

After that press enter and it should have changed

Hope This Helps,

Oh ok you just have to right-click on the column headings at the top (the ones that say Name, Artist, Album, etc) and then click on whichever type of info you want to see (and therefore edit) If you don't see the type of info you want to edit in that right-click list, click the "More" option at the bottom of the right-click menu and scroll though all of the options until you find the one you need.

Just to be clear, you ARE getting the preview bar at the bottom of the screen when you select files, right? See the pic I attached to see what I mean. If you don't get that bar when highlighting files, let me know and I'll tell you how to enable it.

Let's fix the codec error that you're having:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

1. Go to: Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 7.2.0 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.
2. Scroll down to find the link that will "Download [ K-Lite Mega Codec Pack X.X.X ]" where the X.X.X will be the version number
*If the link doesn't work then choose one of the links with "MIRROR" written next to it*
3. Click on it and save the file to your documents
4. When it finishes downloading, find the file and run it

Now we have to install the program:

1. Click Next
2. Check "Advanced Install" and click Next
3. Click Next
4. On the drop down menu, select "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" and click Next
5. Click Next
6. Click Next
7. Check the "Windows Media Player" box and click Next
8. Check both of the boxes:
-"Video file extensions:"
-"Audio file extensions:"
and click Next
9. Click "Select All" and click Next
10. Click Next
11. Click Install

Slammer , no I do NOT get the preview bar at the bottom of the screen.Perhaps that's why I am not able to follow your directions (well there's no 'perhaps' about it at all actually).Yes,would appreciate if you could tell me how to enable it.

Shadowjk : I've downloaded the files from a website called Mp3Sugar.com which was about two months ago and the website disappeared since (it was some Russian music site with crazy cheap music -whole albums for less than a dollar). The files were in flac. (well i still have them as such) ,but I also converted them to mp3s so that I could play my game as the game doesn't support flac.

Tom : I do actually have the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack installed as I use it with Media Player Classic. Thanks for the suggestion but will this actually help me with renaming the files or simply enable WMP to play them?As I previously stated I have no problem playing them in Winamp.

That K-lite pack just lets you play them. Although it's really weird that you can't play them in WMP if it's installed.

To get the preview bar, go to the start -> right-click on Computer -> select Properties -> on the left, click Advanced System Settings -> click Settings under Performance (the top one) -> find the box that says "Show preview and filters in folder" and check its box. (It may be different in Win 7, but your computer seems to be pretty good so just clicking "adjust for best performance" at the top might be something you want to do. Otherwise, most people pick "Let windows choose what's best for my computer; the point is make sure at least that one box is checked)

Thanks Slammer but no go.My setting were already as you've suggested but I went ahead and checked the "adjust for best performance" option anyhow. It still hasn't resolved my music file issue but it actually made Vista look old-school (i left all the other boxes unchecked) and i kinda like it :D

I don't know what else i can do but i really appreciate all your help.

hmm guess it's different in 7. try this:

1. Open My Computer and go to "Organize -> Folder and Search Options".
2. Now enable "Show preview and filters" option.
3. Apply it and your problem will be solved.

Oops you're actually on Vista, not 7, so the original method should have worked. Let me know if you come up with anything, I'll try to look more into it over the weekend. Though at this point it seems it might just be faster and easier to find another that will let you rename that stuff haha. But I'll keep trying!
