Hello

Help me if you can.

I am using Vista (32 bit). I wish I didn't install Service Pack 2. When I did that, the following happened:

1. The microphone stooped working.
2. Media Player Classic produce an error message when I try to open the files I used to play with it.
3. I can see the DVD drive in Windows Explorer. Where is it?

I tried System Restore but it produce an error message that it can't complete the restore.

What shall I do?

Try going to search by the start button
Type device manager.
In device manager update the microphone driver, especially if there is a yellow marker by it

I uninstalled SP2 but this didn;t solve the problem.
There's no yellow marker near the sound device in device manager. The driver is updated but didn't solve the problem.

The only yellow marker is by the DVD/CD-Rom drive. The device manager gives me the following error message:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".

What shall I do?

Uninstalling the service pack is not going to help as it now means your system is unsafe as it is now unsupported by Microsoft for security updates. Support for Vista SP1 and under ended July 12 this year. I would strongly advise you to reinstall SP2 and update as there have been dozens of updates since then. A few reboots and updates later you may find things start to work as they should,

All this sounds like to me is that a few drivers need to be updated.

Microphone : check for soundcard updates
Media Player Classic is not supported in Vista anyway as far as I know, or at least the original version isn't. Check versions.
DVD drive firmware probably needs updating.

Also check your Windows Update for any updates that you may have hidden.

I reinstalled the SP2 but nothing changed. Still the same problems.

There are errors in the registry. How can I fix them before I install a new copy of VIsta?

My Computer

First thing is to stop using any registry cleaners and/or optimizers as this is often the result. If you have used any recently and they have a restore function try to reverse what they did.

Go to Start and type cmd in the Search box.

cmd.exe will open in the space above.

Right-click it and select 'Run as Administrator'.

In the Command Prompt window type sfc /scannow (with the space) and click the Enter key and OK any prompts.

Let it proceed as often simply running that will repair the problem. (SFC stands for system file check).

Nothing happened after doing what you suggested.

In fact, I don't use any registry cleaner or optimizers. All what I did is I installed the SP2 and then the problems began.

My Computer

Did you install SP1 first? It's been a long time since I did it but if I recall one has to install SP1 first and then SP2.
