I had a hard drive failure and reloaded Vista Ultimate signature back onto the new drive. I kept getting invalid product code (it was def. the one on the box). Yesterday Microsoft informed me I would only have limited functanity and it would cost £109 to sort out as they longer supported Vista. I said all I needed was a new product code, but they refused. Et voila my PC today can only access the internet for half an hour at a go. ANy advice on this?

with microsoft you can only use a product code once and that's it, unless it is a system restore disc that came with your computer you can use it to your hearts content.

I dont quite understand, Vista SP2 is still supported. That being said, try to activate by phone

If that does not work a rep will come on. Discuss with him and if your Windows is truly legit, you will be helped.
You can use the key as many times as you like, on the same computer, if OEM.

Thanks Rich - did speak with Microsoft adviser - she was the one who pushed the £109. To be honest, if Ford is correct I may as well spend the money on windows 7 upgrade. Its a bit naughty of MS though.

Trust me on this, you can reinstall on the same computer. I would try to activate by phone again. Get a rep and ask why the key is invalid.
How and where did you get Windows?

I will try by phone again. Sadly bought the software from eBay ( never again), so cannot contact the OEM. will call MS tomorrow and let you know the results. CHeers.

My Computer

IM sorry, but that answer is not good news. If the MS rep says that the key is invalid. You may have to buy a full version of Windows Seven as the upgrade version may not work with an illegal copy to upgrade from. Talk to the rep about this.

Rich, slight misunderstanding - the Vista I bought is genuine, its just from an eBay shop rather than from Amazon or PC world - I will try MS again tomorrow however and ask their advice on upgrades. Cheers.

Thanks for JellyBean - it looks useful. If I had access to regedit i could look it up as well. Sadly Jellybean returns an error code 1816 - Not enough quota is available to process this command

I suspect its due to MS's restriction on my computer use. Nice thought though.

Thanks for your help Richard. Phoned MS Tech support and threw a hissy fit at them. They sorted out the problem remotely using slmgr -rearm them putting in a new validation code. Hopefully I am back to normal. MS's take on support is as follows: If you buy a full version of the O/S, then support is not an issue, if you buy an upgrade then its a one off install and if you have to install it again then tough.
My thanks again.:)

Glad that you got it sorted out.
