Major Advent QT5500 Problem Needs Recovering

Hello there vista forum users
I have recently wanted to reinstall vista 32bit to my laptop due to viruses and freeing up space. whilst i was reinstalling using a recovery disc i got the error code 4 could not copy something to partition(maybe recovery partition) since then i downloaded files for a new recovery disc i tried startup repair but my laptop says 0 windows installations so it cannot even find my os vista.
i looked at the results and i get the error Boot Manager is missing or corrupt, i have tried many commands such as rebuild bcd and fixmbr they both say succesfully completed but neither work.
At startup recovery it doesnt find an OS but it says i can load drivers which says the installation has failed. I've read around the internet some people say it could be a harddrive failure but i doubt it because it was working fine and also on the results error it said hard drive was fine.
On startup i get the message bootmgr could not be found press (cntr alt del) to restart.
I believe my pc is in a very bad state with no OS and my C: drive is empty, please could i have any response as im stuck trying to figure out what to do i will give more info if needed
Help will be much appreciated thanks Luke,

One possibility is that your OS partition is not set to "Active". In that case the MBR would not find the bootmgr and everything falls apart.

You can check that with the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last entry on that webpage). Burn that CD and load from the CD. If it is not active, you can set it active with the same program. The controls are under the Partition tab > Modify (you have to first highlight the partition).
