Event Log missing in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services

I'm having problems opening a program and I've been told to check that Event Log is turned on.

Unfortunately, Event Log is nowhere to be found.

In the list of items in Services, I see Distributed Transaction Coordinator, DNS Client and the I should see Event Log. But, the next item in the list is Expat Shield Monitoring Service.

Any idea how I can restore Event Log to the list?

Many thanks.

Welcome
Event log is not one of the listed services. I do not have it either.
Go to search by the start button and type event log.
Tell me more about the program, I may be able to help.

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for the very prompt reply! :D

As soon as I type Event in the search box, Event Viewer appears at the top of the list of hits under Programs.

When I double click on it, an error message appears saying:

"Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running."

Any ideas?

Thanks.

D.

Richard,

In my Event Viewer there are no logs to Save and Clear. (Is Vistax64 set up differently?)

In the window I see the following:

Event Viewer (Local) on the left pane.

"Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." in the middle pane.

In the third pane, I see the following.....

Help.

I've tried clicking of Refresh, but nothing happens.

The one interesting point I did gather from that link is that his problems arose because of lots of USB connections. I have four external HDs connected via USB. I'll have to address that and get powered versions.

But, first I have to get my Event Log back!

Thanks.

Hi Richard,

I'm copying the instructions for ease of reference.....

> How to take ownership:
>
> Open folder C:\Windows\System32
> Rightclick folder "LogFiles" - open Properties
> open Security-tab and click Advanced
> open Owner-tab and click Edit
> mark Administrator (or your user) under "Change owner to:"
> mark "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
> press OK and press "Continue" to all error messages
> close all open windows

I presume by 'mark' is meant 'highlight' in the case of Change Owner to, since there is no check box beside either of the two ownership choices?

There is a check box beside 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects'

So, I did the following:

1. Highlighted 'Administrators (Denis-PC\Administrators)

2. Ticked the box next to 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects'.

3. Clicked OK. A Windows Security message appeared saying: 'If you have just taken ownership of this object, you will need to close and reopen this object's properties before you can view or change permissions.' I've no idea what this means. I never had to choose Continue. I clicked OK.

4. I clicked OK in the Edit window and then rebooted.

I then did the search for Event Viewer. I still got the error message about it being unavailable.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the ownership pane?

Thanks.

D.

ps. I HATE Vista! :sa:
