Solved Renaming: Cursor to end of filename, before extension?

Whenever I rename a file, after pressing F2 (that's the keyboard shortcut; much faster than Right Click -> Rename) it highlights the file name up to the .extension part, like picture.png where the blue is the highlighted part. That's fine, but usually I just want to add something to the end (or delete something from the end) of the name while keeping the extension. So I press the Right Arrow Key to deselect the whole selected file name so I can type/delete stuff from the end and not replace the file name with whatever I'm typing. What annoys me is that the cursor (|) then puts itself at picture.|png instead of picture|.png (after the . instead of before the .) So after hitting the right arrow key, I have to press the left arrow key to move it over. I've been doing this for years, and I know there must be some little tweak out there that will make that cursor jump to the end of where I highlighted, instead of the character after the highlighted area so I don't have to press two arrow keys every single time I try do rename something. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

The easiest answer is to turn on "hide extensions for known file types" in explorer.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. Although I like to be able to see the extensions because sometimes I change them for various different things. I'll keep it in mind though.

Try this, it worked for me.

Press the up arrow key.

The curser moves to the last letter of the file name (Before the dot).

Haha brilliant! I'll use the down arrow instead, since some of my filenames take up more than one line when editing their names, and the up arrow moves the cursor up a line. But down arrow works perfect! Can't believe I didn't think of that before... many thanks!

Isn't life so simple when you know! I will report this thread as "solved".

I know this is marked as solved, but I tried this again today and it didn't work! pushing the up arrow moves it to the right, like the right arrow. And the down arrow moves it left, like the left arrow. At least in the details view, where the filenames are on one line. It works on the desktop, but that's it. Sorry, I guess I didn't try this out very thoroughly when you suggested it. Do you have any other ideas?
