Dear all...I am a disabled student. My dell vista home premium is great that i've had since 2008. However, sometimes when i turn on my computer i hear what is similar to either a grinding or choke sound running in few second intervals coming from the cpu. As seconds & a minute or so passes it's quiet. I'm not sure if it could be the fan or the motor. Are there any suggestions from the experts out there? In addition, since most of my work is done on my computer, it seems to run either slow or it's just running as if the motor is working hard & loud...it was not like this last year & i maintain my computer by cleaning the disk drives and defraging it, etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you...ccf

Sounds to me like the bearings are going in the CPU fan, or it may just be clogged up with dust, if you can, is it possible to take your computer to a PC shop and ask them to blow out the dust with compressed air? you could do this yourself but it does mean removing the side cover and blowing air from a compressed air can directly at your processor fan.

Dear Mr. Needs,

Thank u for ur quick response. You stated "Sounds to me like the bearings are going in the CPU fan" do u mean that the bearing in the CPU fan are going out? On the other hand if it's a dust problem & I choose to do it myself..."blowing air from a compressed air can directly at your processor fan"...can a 'can' be purchased at places such as Office Depot or Staples Office Supply stores? Please let me know?

the bearings in the fan can be replaced but it's a lot easier and cheaper to just replace the fan and heatsink, the Fan and heatsink look like this:
