I didn't know where to go with this

Someone gave me a laptop; said if I could get it to work I could keep it.

The problem is that someone was trying to make this Windows XP "look like a Mac."

I found a couple of Apple items in the program list and uninstalled them, but that didn't do the trick. Then I found something called FlyakiteOSX. I uninstalled that and when I rebooted I got the Windows screen instead of the Apple. However, when the desktop of the previous user came up there was nothing on it. I can go into the Guest account and get items on the desktop, but I can't do anything in that account.

Can anyone give me help with this? I thought maybe I'd just open a new user account, as ad administrator account, but I can't do that from Guest account and I can't access anything from the old user account because the desktop comes up but with nothing on it, and I can't bring up the Start option.

I would love to get this running for my grandson to play games on so any help to accomplish this would be so appreciated.

It doesn't look like I'm going to get any interest in this, but I will forge ahead and maybe some kind soul will take pity on me. I did finally get the desktop of previous user to come up. For some reason I can not make contact with any search engines. I have connection; I can type in sites and go to them, but I can not access a search engine.

    Hello Nikilet,

It appears that you may need to reinstall the operating system to fix this.

Do you get the Task Manager when you press CTRL,ALT,and DEL
If so try clicking new task and typing explorer.exe and see if you get a desktop.

If you only knew the mess I started out with ... and I have come such a long way, but still, no cigar.

IE8 now opens and works, and the search engines are working in it, and Firefox. I got it to show the Windows screen when booting, instead of Apple, but when it gets to the actual login page it still shows that Mac OS X. I can live with that.

Windows Update will not open. When I go to Services, there isn't even a listing for Windows Update Service. I found a Microsoft page where I could download this, but when I click on the link given it tells me page can't be found. Do you know where I could download this item?

If you hit f10 it should go into the restore partition.
