lost desktop entities

I am running vista home premium edition and somehow while toying around I made most of my icons and desktop folders dissappear. I have no clue what I did or, of course, how to get it back. I think they are just hidden. The reason I think that is because I thought I would just put new ones but when I tried to put a icon on for drive "C" (which I always rename just "C" ) It automatically renamed it C(2). Now to me that means there is already a icon named "C" on this profile. Also there is a new profile named "UpdatusUser" in place of Onkelbob when you look at drive C in my couputer.

C:\Users\UpdatusUser there used to be a C:\Users\Onkelbob........ but onkelbob is gone off of drive C:\

Upon startup Onkelbob is still selected to gain access to the new desktop without many of the icons and folders. also my desktop background is unchanged. I created it from a jpeg. Many of the folders that are gone are just temps that I use to hold my downloaded photos from my phone or camera, and also text that I make before posting letters and such. I hate to loose them and also a list of phone numbers.

If you could help me I would appreciate it.

I ran system restore twice. I attempted to run it the first time on the UpdatusUser profile but I had no accessories folder in that account to find syst tools in. So I changed to my Administrator account and ran it from there. After reboot onto Onkelbob I still did not have my folders or icons and got an error msg on the restore program it was as follows:

Well guess what I wasn't able to save the text that I made in either UpdatusUser or in any other profile folders. I saved it, so I thought in all of the folders except the Admin folder. I appeared to have saved it but in fact I did not.

The error msg basically said that the restore had failed due to an unspecified error and that I should try on a earlier restore date. Which I did.

Thats a good idea run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

My delema is that I don't have a fully funtioning account. for example if I go to start and then all programs I don't have a accessories folder that contains things like notepad and system tools.

I posted a thread that died. no more activity. I still am having problems with one of my profiles . There are files and icons hidden on that profile. I know they are hidden because of two things. When I try to create a icon and name it the same name as the one that I think is hidden widnows adds a 2 to it like this " Desk_Top(2)". Another reason I know they are hidden is that when I go into control panel and select Appearance & Personalization/change desktop background ....in the location bar in the popup window the location of the hidden folder appears. C:\Users\Onkelbob\Desktop\D_top\Current_Wallpaper along with all the backgrounds I have created and stored.

Now in addition, when I am logged onto the new profile that appeared on my computer "UpdatusUser", The old profile "Onkelbob" is no longer there. The profile is not fully functional . There are folders missing , but they are not missing from other profiles. The acessories folder is missing when I press Start\all programs. I don't want to reformat my hard drive. I guess that the thing to do is to create a new profile with all the things that I want and then delete the old one and then maybe rename the new one. The thing that is bad about that idea is that there are a lot of things that will be lost in the hidden folders if I do that. What do you think?

One other thing on the startup page where you select the profile the icon is still shown as Onkelbob. but I come up in the UpdatusUser profile

I did some trial and error on my own and tried the following:


controlpanel\folder options\view\group\show hidden files and folders


The icons and folders reappeared on my desktop and I was able to unhide them. I still no longer have a fully functional profile. ie. I can't access the accessories folder in all programs on the start menu. It just ain't there anymore. There may be others missing too.

This thread seems to be dead, no responses. I tried to restart another but it was disabled or something. It was called (renamed profile: UpdatusUser)

I have a windows vista disk that has anytime updaate on it also says that it has only 32 bit software. I haven't been able to do a repair from it.

If that is an install dvd, we can save your stuff and then install again. Can you do that?
