Vista stuck on welcome screen/ files will not show

So I have an hp g60-235dx running vista sp2. I have always run Norton 360 but it recently expired and for about a week my laptop was unprotected. During this time I noticed several pop ups appearing and my computer was running slower than usual. So I reuped on Norton and did a virus scan. It found a few bad files and removed them. I am still having some issues that I can’t figure out how to fix or get by. The first problem is getting stuck on the welcome screen. In normal mode I cannot get past this screen for some reason. In safe mode I can. The second odd problem I am having is that all of my files seem to be wiped out. When I click on “documents” or “computer” the folders are completely empty. When I click on “programs” at the start up menu that folder only shows the Norton program I just installed and nothing else. However, when clicking on “recent items” under the start up menu I am able to access all of my recent documents. Because of this I cannot do a system restore. I have searched under the start menu search for “system restore,” “applications,” and “system” and haven’t found anything.
Is there anyone who has had or heard of this problem? Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
~Steve

It sounds like you were hit by a virus. This being the case, we can try to save your stuff. but not hopeful and they may contain a virus. The first thing that I suggest, is a System Restore a few weeks before the virus
If you cant SR in normal mode try in safe mode
