Solved New HD not recognised after installing Windows Vista

Hi,
I just bought a new 320GB Sata HD for my Dell Inspiron 1525 as the old HD is damaged and no longer booting. Anyway I installed Windows Vista Home 32bit from the disc that came with the laptop and had no problems. When I was in Windows one of the first things that I did was adjust the admin. settings which required a restart. I restarted the computer and was then told that there is no HD detected. It's not even showing up in the BIOS. I have tried switching between ATA and AHCI settings but that makes no difference. The strange thing is that when I put the old damaged HD in it still shows up in the BIOS. Is this a fault with the new HD I bought? Why did it work perfectly initially? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Well that sounds like a dead drive?

Can you connect it to another PC in a caddy or something to test it on a working system?

I have a HD enclosure somewhere but I cannot find it so I'm going to get a new one off Ebay next week. The thing is the drive is brand-new. Just got it yesterday. Worked perfectly initially, only stopped after I rebooted. Very odd.

My Computer

Is it possible that when I installed Windows on the new HD via the DELL reinstallation DVD that my BIOS was somehow replaced by an older version that for some reason doesn't recognise the new HD? I know that I had updated the BIOS in the last year or so so it was running a newer version the first time I put in the HD. Might this explain why it's not being recognised now?

My Computer

Hi,

That is unlikely to be what has happened, BIOS updates are a specific task & is not done by a re-installation disk.

The only way the drive would not be reconised by the BIOS is if it was faulty or as you say an incompatable version.

So, what is the make & model of the two hard disks in wquestion here?

To assist with the BIOS update, we need more information on your PC make, model & current versions etc.

The old hard drive is a Toshiba MK1646GSX and the new one is a Magnetic Data Technologies MD03200-AVDW-RO. My PC is a Dell Inspiron 1525 that was running Windows Vista home 32bit. Current BIOS version is A17

My Computer

Hi,

Well all that looks good!

I think you should take the drive back to the retailer for a swap. Is that possible?

I certainly hope so. Bought it off Ebay. I've emailed the seller a couple of times but no reply. Then I went to the manufacturer's website. It's not very reassuring. Look at the state of it
Magnetic Data Technologies
Under FAQ the first 'frequently asked question is' "My drive is bad, how do I get a warranty replacement?
Please refer to the dealer whom you purchased the product from.
Do contact them as they hold the warranty of your purchase"

As I said, not very reassuring.

I put the HD in an enclosure and formatted it on a different system. Now it is working perfectly on my laptop. The next step is trying to recover all the data on the old faulty hard drive. Thanks for the help everybody.
