Recently, my computer has been a bit sluggish, and there is usually about 50-60% of my physical memory being used up, even when idle.
I've had a quick browse on the internet and apparently this isn't unusual. I've downloaded process explorer, and these are the printscreens:

Virus scans with AVG are saying that there are no viruses, any suggestions?

sorry if this threat has been done so many times before, but each one seems to be individualized.

Many thanks.

Hello Jibbyc,
The service host looks fine, i noticed that you have a program running called Download Accelerator, is this actually running right now ? Seems if you are not using it right now that you could stop this one .
It also seems as if you have 2 browsers open at the same time, IE and Google Chrome , this takes up resources, i would only use one browser at one time myself .
You ought to see what my FireFox is using.. whew... but , i love that browser, with its security add on's .
You may be in the same spot i am, just needing more RAM .

AVG is a fair anti virus, so, if you had something it should have picked it up, tell ya what, check for Malware using free version of Malwarebytes' Antimalware ( mbam for short ) , update the latest version with latest definitions and run a quick scan in normal mode, and post back the results.
Free version of mbam is here : Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Let us know results so others may learn.

You can try setting Superfetch to only cache boot files. It worked for me on Vista pre SP1.

Change SuperFetch to Only Cache System Boot Files in Vista - How-To Geek

Make sure to set both EnablePrefetcher and EnableSuperfetch to 2.

(If you search the comments for MilesAhead you'll see my comment recommending setting both keys to the same number.)

You may want to make a restore point or use ERUNT to back up your registry before editing it.

I found Windows Seven is smoother with the default settings of 3 for each key. But Vista prefetch stat gathering can run your HD more than using memory. Caching all the memory is normal as long as it doesn't give out of memory errors while doing it.

Every now and then Vista will creep up to 70, even 80% usage and then only way I've found decrease usage (other than a reboot) is to max out the memory with a virtual machine. Magically once I've turned off the VM Vista is using 200-500 mb less memory than before running it. I've always wondered what's up with that. I have superfetch and other unnecessary programs/services disabled. Any ideas? 50-60% (of 2 gb) with a browser running is standard but, for example, earlier today I caught it at 80%.

Windows Seven does a better job with Superfetch. After running it for awhile with the same settings I was using with Vista I decided to try it with the default 3 and 3 Superfetch settings. Also I made a 1 GB min/max swap file. Seems to run fine. It uses just about all free memory for StandBy. But the swap file max seems to stay around 300 MB or lower. Runs smooth. I have superfetch service set to Automatic Delayed Start. Vista is sort of stuck between. For better prefetch action I'd upgrade to W7 if possible.

edit: the W7 machine is an HP dual core with 2 GB ram. I tried running with no swap. Although I didn't get any real error I got some "phantom" out of memory errors(got error dialog but didn't have to close any apps.. weird.) Seems like putting all the memory on StandBy it can't figure out what to do if there's no swap file. Pagefile.sys of 1 GB makes it happy.

edit2: I don't want to get in any arguments about the "right" size of the page file. It varies with the system and how you want to use it. There's no "right" answer. That's why it's adjustable.

I know that 7 does a better job with memory management but does Vista have a leak?

Hey, thank you everybody, I am currently away from my computer, but when I get back I will notify you of the results.

The download manager is something which I like to have open, but thank you for the suggestion. I did try closing it, and it only lowered it by a few percent, it didn't seem to have that much of an effect.

What exactly does super fetch do?

I wasn't aware that I was running IE, I only use chrome, I didn't see that IE was open, I don't know how that has happened
