Hey guys, I'm trying to install windows installer update version and as soon as i start it the error comes up "not enough storage to process this command"

I've tried everything i could find on the net i.e- modifying registry IRPStackSize to above 15, tried 50, 20, 18 etc, also uninstalled norton antivirus, I'm running out of ideas

System details are:
vista home premium
intel duo 2.1
2gb ram

The only thing that is out of the ordinary is that when i run task manager, physical memory is about 40% even with just i.e running.

i have plnety of storage space- 20gb at least!

its really frustrating me!!!

can someone please solve my problem? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for the reply rich.

So i downloaded the hard disc check for a fujitsu on tacktech.com, and ran it and it said:

warning- no hard disk drive has been identified in your system. The following are possible causes:

- hdd power cable no property attached to the hdd
- hdd interface cable is not properly attached to the hdd
- hdd master-slave setting is incorrect.

"Please power down your pc and check the above items, if after checking the possible cause the problem still persists, it is possible the hdd itself is faulty"

i can see this as being a physical problem with my hard drive? i have been able to save plenty og gigs of stuff on there, and also recently copied all my files to a external drive to back up? could it be possible some settings are wrong?

how would i go about checking or fixed the "hss master slave setting the program is referring to?

Thanks

Dont think that applies to you. Do you have two hard drives?

Does your computer recognize the hard drive? Click on the computer icon on your desktop, then open.

Is there a necessity to update other than having the latest version? I've noticed with Windows Installer "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is often a good policy. The thing is really complex.

Also I would search Microsoft Knowledge Base for that error message.

I did a cursory search for installer error and didn't get that msg.

hey milesahead, the reason why i want to update the installer is because I'm trying to install a version of rosetta stone (language tuition software) and when i try to open up the instalation exe file, a windoes error comes up:

"the installation package could not be opened, verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the package vendor and verify that it is a windows installer package"

the software worked on my friends computer, so its not an error with the software, i googled this error and it seems that i need to update my installer.

any ideas? if i can install this software, then i wont need to update windows installer.

thanks

I was going to suggest the installer cleanup utility. But evidently they took it off. I haven't tried Rosetta Stone. Have you checked if there's a portable version? Also I'd look if they have their own support forum. Someone with the same problem may have a work-around.

If you paid for the app they should give you some support how to install.
