Two vista issues

My wife's dell laptop has two issues a major startup issue, and a screensaver/display shutdown issue.
First I will ask about the startup issue, from a cold start the first phase of startup goes OK, after the login prompt things really start to drag. After logging in I see the standard windows message, with the revolving circle, normal I guess.
Tonight I shut down the machine pulled the plug for an hour or more went to power it up and the login screen appeared as normal, after logging in, I could see the harddrive light, flickering away, for over a half hour with the screen still showing the welcome screen, it finally started in operation mode after pressing ctrl+alt+delete.
I looked at the event log following the instructions on a post on this site, but I don't know what to look for.
This has been a problem for over a year, any ideas for a solution?

Issue two, screen not shutting down after setting a power off time.
This is a new issue, started a few weeks ago after a power surge/drop, or whatever. My desktop shut down and I have had no issues.
Her laptop however after doing a restart, said something like, cannot identify the power supply, following the instructions on the screen, I unplugged the power supply (both ends). let it sit for five minutes or so, plugged it back in, good to go.

Now we still have the screen shutdown issue, and we don't have a screensaver either, even after turning both options on and off, back on again.
Again any ideas?
by the way the laptop, is running Vista home premium 32 bit.

Thanks for reading.

On rereading your post I see you had a power surge. Chances are good some OS files got corrupted. I would back up your data and think about doing a restore/reinstall. It's a good idea to have at least a cheapie UPS to prevent those power glitches that last a few seconds.

Wasn't in a boot just sitting there, with the screen off. I will try all the suggestions, I am restarting it again with a boot log, when I get that done, I will post it on this thread, and let you guys review it. Might not be til tomorrow though.
Thanks

NTFS is a journaling file system. So you may be ok with the system repair. I had a 2 second power glitch right when booting OS/2 quite a few years ago. Back then it took 17 diskettes to install it again. After that I bought a UPS. :)

The first one I shelled out for the APC. $300 and change back in 1993. Unfortunately the budget is a lot tighter now. I try to get something from Best Buy or the Egg on sale. :(

I did a boot log, several hundred lines, but the computer, was up and running, in a few minutes...?. I restarted the system normally without one program, quicktime. Back where I was. Got to get to bed, will update tomorrow.
