Optical mouse turns on and off

Recently, my optical USB mouse has started turning on and off randomly. Sometimes it works for a few seconds, turns off for a few seconds, etc., and sometimes it doesn't work for a minute or more. Each time it turns on or off it is accompanied by a noise I've never heard before, more like a thud than a beep. I found this thread: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-hardware-devices/143348-optical-usb-mouse-turning-off.html, but I haven't been able to use the same solution because I can't figure out what IntelliPoint is and how to install it. I also don't see the mentioned update when I go into Windows Update. I tried deleting the drivers, restarting and plugging in the mouse; it seemed to help but within a few minutes it was back to the same situation. And all this is complicated because I'm not using an English version of Vista. Any ideas?

Welcome
This is what to try
Using the mouse on another computer to determine if the mouse needs to be replaced
Go to search by start button type device manager and update the mouse driver
Try another mouse and see if that works.

Checked the mouse, definitely works fine on other comps.
I've checked the drivers, they're the latest available.

About the other solution (in the link I posted), I was able to download and install IntelliPoint, but Windows Update still doesn't see the update the post mentions.

What now?

Hmm well it seems to work fine in another user profile, but strange thing is it's been working more or less fine since I've booted up. I'm not at home right now but somewhere else, and so far it's stuttered a couple of times but hasn't been as bad as it is at home. I'll see if over the next half-hour it keeps working fine or starts to act up again.
