Long bootup and shutdown

Hello

I'm new in this forum and hopefully someone can help me. I have been trying to solve the extremely slow boot-up and shut-down on my wife's Dell laptop. I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers but this has got me stumped.

Start-up time from the moment I power on till I reach the the Windows logon screen takes in excess of 10 minutes. After logging in, it takes probably another minute more before the computer is ready for use. Shutdown is slightly faster - about 3 minutes.

I've downloaded and used MS Fixit and though it detects a problem (Windows Update component are configured incorrectly) and claims to fix it, the problems continue. I have also used sfc/scannow to attempt any repairs. The feedback tells me that corrupt files were found but it was unable to fix some of them. I'm attaching the CBS log file.

I've also tried the Startup Repair utility but it also tells me that the problem cannot be fixed. I'm not sure if it's related, but I also noticed the absence of any restore points for tp roll back to. I manually created Restore Points just last night, but the system shows that I don't have any today!

Apart from these issues, the laptop seems to be running fine, except for the occasional slowdowns when the computer suddenly seems busy for one reason or another.

Appreciate any help I can get.

Perry

Hello, check this out and see if it helps you out. How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 Article ID: 929833 - Last Review: September 29, 2011 - Revision: 4.0

Once you have used SFC, it shows ways to repair the files that show as not repaired. Give this a look and see if it helps you out.

Hi Yard Dog

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks promising, but where do I get the source files to replace the corrupted ones?

Thanks.

If the System File Checker tool cannot repair a file, follow these steps:

At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
takeown /f Path_And_File_Name
For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER to grant administrators full access to the file:
icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
For example, type icacls E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /grant administrators:F.
Type the following command to replace the file with a known good copy of the file:
Copy Path_And_File_Name_Of_Source_File Path_And_File_Name_Of_Destination
For example, type copy E:\temp\jscript.dll E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.

This was at the bottom of that link i gave you to look at. It gives you an example, you have to use the file found by SFC for your scan , put those in place of the examples and get the good copy of file and use it to replace the bad copy .

Elevated command prompt is an Admin command prompt, Start, accessories, command prompt, right click it and select , run as admin. this gets you the elevated command prompt. In case that part was confusing you , i added this post.

Here's what I did.

I used the elevated command prompt. I followed the instructions as per the link until the final part where the command is to replace the missing/corrupted files. Like my previous question, where can I find the original files with which to replace the missing/corrupted files?

Hello oolnor and welcome to the forums

Can you do the following for me please? This will give us a little more information about your problem :)

OTL

Download OTL to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Once OTL has completed its first scan it will save notepad copies of the scans in the folder that OTL was started from. Unless set to produce an Extras log it will only produce OTL.txt in subsequent scans.

A copy of an OTL fix log is saved in a text file at

:\_OTL\MovedFiles
in most cases this will be C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
