ok, so did the scan and all good - I run a pretty clean machine and am always on the lookout for weird stuff so I dont think its viral or anything major - just misplaced stuff.

It all started when I noticed a desktop folder in my contacts file. i deleted it but it deleted all my icons. Then someone suggested i drag it into my original desktop file but then the games began. Some links and documents inside my folders were shaded out and would not open. Something about the "title of the file is too large" when I tried moving things around too.

See snaps of the resulting scan, desktop folder turning up in contacts file and resulting **** storm of multiple files under my generic desktop file. The top file and the very bottom file have all my icons in them but the multiple center folders are all empty.

And thats where i am.
