I had one drive of a RAID 0 array die on me. My plain is to reinstall Vista on the surviving drive. When I get to the point where I choose which drive to install on, my only choice is a recently installed 2TB hard drive that contains all of my backups, which I obviously need. The drive does show up in BIOS and in diskpart, just not in the Vista install program. I did delete the RAID Array, and also I have connected the HD to a different bank of SATA connectors. Is there something else I need to do to make Vista understand that the drive is no longer part of a RAID?

If you don't want windows installed on the external drive I would have it connected when you do so. Have you checked the bios settings? Are you sure that that drive isn't dead? Have you run any diagnostics?

Hello Chappie,
You should be able to boot to your RAID setup screen, and double check to make sure that you have removed the HDD from being RAID.
In addition, you may be able to use the clean command with diskpart at boot to wipe the HDD to then be able to use it afterwards to install Vista on.

ok, I'll try the clean command, that may do it, as the drive does show up in diskpart. Unfortunately, I seem to get a lot of bluescreens when I use diskpart, which may be indicitave of a deeper problem.

The clean command worked, sort of. There is now a partition that I can select in the Windows install screen. Unfortunately it has no volume, and any time I try anything in diskpart related to volumes, it blue screens. select volume, list volume, anything volume = blue screen. Anyone have any ideas that will save me a rough conversation with the wife as to why I'm ordering a bunch of new stuff to build a new PC?

If so, you could let Vista finish installing, then use Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) to shrink the C: partition to create new partitions with instead afterwards.

You would normally be able to select to install Vista on a unallocated HDD/partition since it will format it during the installation.
Do you have another computer, or a friends computer, that you could put the HDD drive in to see if you may be able to format it and run chkdsk on it from within that computer's Windows?
What brand is the HDD? We may be able to look up their recommend diagnostic program to use to help determine the state (ex: dead or dying) of the HDD.

I tried that briefly, with no success. I may give it one more shot. It's a WD Raptor model #WD1500ADFD. When the first disk of the array died, I tested both. The dead one came back as "too many errors" to list or something like that, the other one checked out fine. I compared serial numbers, so I'm confident that I'm not trying to install on the dead one. I will try sticking it in an old PC and see what happens again later tonight.

yes, that's what I used to determine the life or death status of the individual drives in my array. thanks for all your ideas, it's the best help I've gotten anywhere. I think It'll be quicker (and more fun) to just build a new one at this point.
